Oscar Piastri radio messages, Lando Norris clash at F1 Singapore GP overshadow McLaren title celebrations

McLaren‘s triumphant claim of the 2025 F1 Constructors title at Formula 1‘s Singapore Grand Prix was clouded by a dramatic incident between its drivers as fiery Oscar Piastri radio messages come to light following contact with Lando Norris.

The collision happened on the first lap as Norris aggressively attempted to overtake Piastri, leading to light contact that forced Piastri off the racing line while Norris managed to gain position and ultimately finish the race in third.

The clash was not just a racing mishap but a turning point in the intra-team rivalry with important championship implications.

The incident unfolded as Norris sought to pass Piastri at Turn 2, while trying to avoid other competitors including Max Verstappen.

Norris’s move saw him slightly brushing the rear of Verstappen’s Red Bull, which caused his McLaren to oversteer and veer into Piastri’s path on the outside.

The forced contact pushed Piastri towards the barriers, compelling him to relinquish his position to avoid a worse outcome.

The Australian was visibly frustrated by the incident and expressed his displeasure vehemently through fiery radio messages to his race engineer Tom Stallard.

Piastri repeatedly lamented the fairness of the move emphatically stating “Mate, that’s not fair” and critiquing Norris’s avoidance technique, essentially blaming him for crashing into his teammate instead of skillfully navigating around other cars.

The tension built further as McLaren’s race control decided not to take any action against Lando Norris clash, allowing him to keep the gained position, a decision that Piastri found difficult to accept.

“So are we cool with Lando just barging me out of the way or? What’s the go to there?” Piastri added.

“That is not fair. I am sorry. That’s not fair. If he has to avoid another car by crashing into his teammate than that is a pretty **** job of avoiding it.”

Oscar Piastri misses McLaren title celebrations

The internal discord was palpable as Piastri’s dissatisfaction seemed to simmer beyond the race itself, which was underscored by his absence from McLaren podium celebrations after clinching back-to-back Constructors titles.

Viewers and commentators also noticed that Piastri did not respond to McLaren CEO Zak Brown’s cheery post-race message praising him as a “back-to-back champion.”

It was later revealed that Piastri had shut down his car and communication systems as per team instructions at parc fermé, cutting the radio message before it could be heard fully by the driver.

In an interview after the race, the 24-year old driver was more rational and refused to be drawn too far into the controversial incident.

“I need to look more at the replays to know exactly what happened,” Piastri said. “The main thing is, the two cars coming together, it’s never what we want. So I’ll go and have a look at it in more detail, and come to my conclusion.”

Piastri also moved to walk back his radio remarks, specifically his labelling of the decision not to address the matter as ‘unfair’.

“I thought in the moment, you know, obviously, it’s the first lap, tensions are high,” he said. ”We’re obviously encouraged to share our views on what happened, and I did that, and I’m sure we’ll discuss.”

Norris’s third place finish in Singapore narrowed Piastri’s lead to 22 points, intensifying the championship battle with only six races remaining in the 2025 season.
