F1 2026 Driver standings after Spanish GP: Antonelli edges closer to the title

Kimi Antonelli further extended his championship lead to 81 points over Mercedes teammate George Russell following victory at the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix.

The 14th round of the season saw Antonelli capitalize on a perfectly timed Virtual Safety Car and a costly pit stop for polesitter Lando Norris before holding off a late charge from Max Verstappen to win by 4.3 seconds.

Antonelli’s victory has effectively turned the title fight into a procession unless McLaren or Ferrari make a miraculous turnaround. With 292 points from 14 races, he is averaging 20.86 points per race, a rate that would see him finish the season with approximately 477 points if he maintains his current pace.

His closest rival Russell sits on 211 points, meaning Antonelli would need to score just 109 points from the remaining nine races to guarantee the title even if Russell wins every single remaining Grand Prix.

Antonelli needs to finish on the podium in just five of the remaining nine races to clinch the 2026 F1 Drivers Championship, assuming Russell continues his current form of averaging 15 points per race.

For context, Antonelli has finished on the podium in 12 of the 14 races this season including eight victories, making the prospect of him faltering in the final stretch seem highly unlikely.

Lewis Hamilton suffered his first retirement of the 2026 season after a brake failure on lap 39, effectively ending his title chances. Norris, meanwhile, closed to within just five points of the Ferrari driver with his Madring podium.

F1 2026 Constructor standings tells a similar story of Mercedes dominance with an unassailable 145-point lead over Ferrari.
