While specifics on the closure remain under wraps amid an urgent manufacturer meeting, the FIA acknowledged the wording of the regulations.
“The regulations clearly define the maximum compression ratio and the method for measuring it, which is based on static conditions at ambient temperature,” an FIA spokesperson said. “This procedure has remained unchanged despite the reduction in the permitted ratio for 2026.

Fuel-flow meter temperature manipulation
Another major loophole targeted by the FIA involved potential tampering with the Allengra fuel-flow meter temperature.
Experts note this stems from the sustainable fuel transition, where temperature fluctuations might mimic density variations, fooling the ultrasonic sensor into permitting higher effective flow.

Under initial wording, teams were barred only from intentional heating or chilling of the meter, leaving room for non-intentional methods to alter readings: “Any intentional heating or chilling of the fuel-flow meter is forbidden.”
Such fuel-flow meter temperature manipulation could skew fuel composition data or accuracy, allowing excess energy flow beyond the 3000MJ/h limit and yielding lap-time gains.
Post-December’s World Motor Sport Council meeting, the FIA rewrote the rule to: “Any device, system, or procedure, the purpose of which is to change the temperature of the fuel-flow meter is forbidden.”
This broader prohibition eliminates ambiguities, ensuring no indirect cooling or heating systems—like ambient airflow tweaks or material choices—could be disguised as unintentional.
