2026 F1 Rule Changes: Energy Management in Qualifying

At the heart of the April meeting was a decision to recalibrate how much energy power units can harvest and deploy in qualifying, with the aim of making the sessions feel more “pure.”

The FIA, teams and engine manufacturers agreed to reduce the maximum energy recharge limit per lap from 8 megajoules (MJ) to 7 MJ, effectively tightening the window for drivers to harvest energy on the straights while still allowing enough flexibility to manage their power–tyre balance.

This change is intended to curb the creeping trend of drivers lifting‑off or “super‑clipping” early in the lap purely to meet energy‑target constraints.

Drivers have often struggled to bring Intermediates into their operating temperature quickly in light rain or mixed conditions, leading to a “tear‑off” phase where they lack grip and confidence.

By increasing tyre blankets temperature, Pirelli and the FIA hope to give drivers better initial grip when they switch to intermediates, reducing the risk of off‑track moments.

At the same time, the maximum ERS deployment in wet weather has been reduced, effectively limiting torque output on the rear axle to improve car control and reduce wheelspin in low‑grip conditions.
