Home hero Jack Miller placed Prima Pramac Yamaha at the top of Australian MotoGP FP1 timesheets with a late flying lap of 1:28.281 setting the tone for what promises to be an exhilarating race weekend.
Miller’s fresh rubber fitted in the closing moments of the session allowed him to edge out Alex Marquez aboard his BK8 Gresini Ducati by a mere 0.036 seconds, as Pedro Acosta took third for KTM.
The Australian rider delivered an impressive performance especially considering the challenging conditions at the iconic Phillip Island circuit, known for its fast, flowing corners and capricious weather.
The track which is located on the southern coast of Australia is celebrated for its picturesque setting and demanding layout, with riders needing precision and bravery to master corners such as the Doohan Corner, Southern Loop, and the final fast bends leading into the main straight.
Weather conditions included variable winds affecting bike stability, making the session a test of skill and adaptability as the entire field of 22 riders pushed hard to set early benchmarks, with tyre strategy playing a crucial role in final lap times.
Alex Marquez, who is aiming to secure second place in the world championship behind his absent brother Marc Marquez, had a tense moment early on the session when he clipped the back wheel of Miguel Oliveira at Turn 1 (Doohan Corner).
Despite the close call, no further action was taken after investigation, allowing Marquez to maintain his aggressive pace throughout Australian MotoGP FP1.
Alex mostly ran front mediums for his times after starting on used softs but switched to a new medium front tyre towards the session’s end to try to chase down Jack Miller’s fastest lap.
Meanwhile, Pedro Acosta delivered an impressive performance to slot into third place with a time of 1:28.416, demonstrating strong pace on the KTM RC16.
He was closely followed by Indonesian MotoGP race winner Fermin Aldeguer who showed promising speed aboard the sister Gresini Ducati GP24, placing fourth with a 1:28.466 lap.
Yamaha’s former world champion Fabio Quartararo secured fifth just ahead of Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi who is due to serve a double long-lap penalty on Sunday for causing Marc Marquez’s crash in Indonesia.

Honda LCR’s Johann Zarco, VR46 Ducati’s Fabio Di Giannantonio and Red Bull KTM’s Brad Binder completed the top ten, all showing strong pace.
The midfield pack featured riders like Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse Aprilia), Honda duo Joan Mir and Luca Marini as well as Franco Morbidelli (VR46) with competitive lap times ranging from 1:28.760 to 1:28.986.
Morbidelli was the only rider to experience a fall in FP1 after going down at the Southern Loop but fortunately escaped injury.
Late in the session, Joan Mir’s Honda suffered a mechanical failure resulting in oil spillage through Doohan Corner, prompting a yellow flag that momentarily disrupted the session.
Italian Enea Bastianini and Spaniard Pol Espargaro both on KTM machinery posted solid times in the mid-1:29 range, while Monster Yamaha’s Alex Rins clocked 1:29.239, nearly a second behind Miller’s benchmark.
Miller’s Prima Pramac Yamaha teammate Miguel Oliveira was just a bit further back in 18th place with a time of 1:29.329 despite earlier contact with Marquez.
Towards the rear, Lorenzo Savadori and Thai rider Somkiat Chantra were working to improve their pace, with veteran Ducati test rider Michele Pirro and rookie Ai Ogura rounding out the field.
