Gresini rookie Fermin Aldeguer dominated Sunday’s Indonesian MotoGP race from lights to flag to claim his maiden MotoGP victory, as Marc Marquez and Marco Bezzecchi crashed out on the opening lap.
Aldeguer made a grand comeback after losing out in Saturday’s Sprint to become the second-youngest winner in the premier class since Jorge Martin in 2021.
As the lights went out for the 27-lap race, sprint winner and pole sitter Marco Bezzecchi had a less-than-ideal getaway, losing several positions as the field took off.
Meanwhile, Pedro Acosta who started from fifth on the grid exploded off the line to lead the pack into Turn 1, closely pursued by Honda’s Luca Marini and the determined Aldeguer.
However, the opening lap took a harrowing turn at Turn 7 when Bezzecchi, attempting to recover positions, collided with Marc Marquez who was running behind the Aprilia.
Bezzecchi slid from first to seventh before tagging the back of Marquez, sending both riders crashing into the gravel and ending their race prematurely.
Miraculously, both riders walked away, though Marquez was visibly hurt as he clutched his shoulder before he was reported to have suffered a possible right collarbone fracture and was taken to the medical center for medical evaluation.
Aldeguer quickly took advantage of the chaos and paced himself to overtake Acosta for the lead by the eighth lap.
From there, the young rookie exhibited composure beyond his years, steadily pushing his BK8 Gresini Ducati to pull away from the chasing pack with precision and consistency.
The 20-year-old rookie maintained a blitzing rhythm, using the front of the Mandalika circuit to full advantage, never relinquishing his lead and accelerating away from the chasing riders.
As the laps ticked by, Aldeguer steadily extended his advantage, at one point enjoying a gap exceeding a full second. His lap times were consistently quick and clean, allowing him to keep pressures from Acosta and Alex Marquez at bay comfortably.
On lap 15, Alex Rins surged into third place, intensifying the battle for podium spots. This jockeying continued until the closing laps, when Alex Marquez reclaimed the second position from Rins on lap 23, only for Acosta to reassert himself on the final lap in a decisive move that secured the runner-up place.
Fermin Aldeguer ultimately crossed the finish line nearly seven seconds ahead his closest rival, securing his maiden MotoGP victory in his rookie season.
Behind, Pedro Acosta demonstrated defensive brilliance throughout the race to cling onto second place for Red Bull KTM.
