Marco Bezzecchi snatches Indonesia MotoGP Sprint victory from Fermin Aldeguer in last lap duel

Marco Bezzecchi mounted a relentless comeback after a nightmare start to snatch Indonesia MotoGP Sprint victory from Fermin Aldeguer, while Raul Fernandez held strong to secure the first podium for Trackhouse Aprilia.

Starting from pole position, Bezzecchi faced an unexpected nightmare start which saw him drop down to eighth place in the opening meters of the 13-lap sprint race at the Mandalika International Street Circuit.

Despite this setback, the Aprilia rider orchestrated an extraordinary recovery that culminated in a daring last-lap overtake to take victory from the young and impressive Aldeguer, who led for most of the race.

From the moment the lights went out, the 20-year-old Gresini rookie took advantage of Bezzecchi’s poor start and seized the holeshot with remarkable precision, immediately jumping to the front of the pack and setting the tone for the sprint.

Pedro Acosta also made a strong start on the KTM, moving up to second place early on, while riders like Luca Marini and Raul Fernandez quickly settled into their respective battles near the front.

Acosta initially showcased strong pace, briefly challenging Aldeguer for the lead, but a crash on lap five dashed his podium hopes and removed a significant contender from the battle.

With Acosta out, Aldeguer capitalized on his clear track ahead extending a lead of around 1.7 seconds by the midpoint of the race. Behind him, Fernandez held a solid second closely pursued by Marini.

By lap 5, Bezzecchi began carving through the pack with calculated aggression overtaking both Marquez brothers, but found himself stuck in fourth behind Marini’s Honda.

Bezzecchi successfully overtook Marini on Lap 8 and closed in on Fernandez, taking second place with an impressive fastest lap of 1:29.638, substantially quicker than Aldeguer’s 1:30.379 at that time.

Over the next laps, Bezzecchi relentlessly chipped away at Aldeguer’s lead and by Lap 11 the Aprilia had slashed the gap to under one second.

The final lap was set to be a battlefield as Bezzecchi who was hungry for victory, pursued the rookie leader aggressively before executing the crucial overtake at Turn 11, forcing Aldeguer to run wide as he took the lead.

Fermin Aldeguer made a spirited attempt to fight back at the next corner but Marco Bezzecchi held the advantage to cross the finish line just 0.157 seconds ahead, snatching Indonesia MotoGP Sprint victory.

Meanwhile, Raul Fernandez sailed home in third, securing his maiden MotoGP Sprint podium for Trackhouse Aprilia — a career milestone for the young Spaniard.

Alex Marquez finished in fourth place, closely followed by Honda riders Joan Mir and Luca Marini, although Marini was put under investigation for a technical infringement concerning tyre pressure.

Marc Marquez clawed his way back from 12th to finish seventh after serving a long lap penalty for his contact with Alex Rins earlier on the opening lap. His team-mate Francesco Bagnaia finished last as the factory Ducati duo faced performance struggles at Mandalika.

Meanwhile, VR46 riders Franco Morbidelli and Fabio Di Giannantonio followed in eighth and ninth, respectively, as Pramac’s Miguel Oliveira rounded out the top ten.

KTM’s Brad Binder split the Pramac Yamahas in 11th as Jack Miller followed in 12th, while Alex Rins took 13th for Yamaha.

Five riders suffered DNFs; Pedro Acosta crashed at Turn 1 on Lap 5 and later withdrew into the garage, while Fabio Quartararo crashed his Yamaha on the final lap of the race, joining Johann Zarco, Enea Bastianini and Somkiat Chantra as non-finishers.
