Hilarious Fernando Alonso team radio moments at F1 Singapore GP go viral amid frustrations

Fernando Alonso team radio was buzzing with frustrations during Formula 1‘s Singapore Grand Prix as hilarious exchanges with his race engineer went viral much to the delight of fans voting him as the driver of the day.

Starting from a qualifying position outside the top ten, Alonso showcased resilience and racecraft to finish a strong seventh place marking his best result after the summer break and a crucial points haul for Aston Martin.

Alonso’s race pace stood out in Singapore’s demanding street circuit conditions where he demonstrated his experienced ability to extract maximum performance from his car despite numerous obstacles.

Alonso was overtaken by Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar at the start of the race before reclaiming his position a few laps later, only to be re-passed after the pit stops.

The strategy for Alonso was typical of Singapore, with a one-stop plan switching from soft to medium tyres, however, the race took a frustrating turn during his pit stop on lap 28.

The Aston Martin crew executed a painfully slow stop, lasting over 9 seconds, which cost Alonso nearly 10 seconds and caused him to lose significant track position—dropping him from the top 10 down to 15th.

Alonso did not hide his irritation over the team radio, telling his Aston Martin race engineer Andrew Vizard emphatically, “If you speak to me every lap, I will disconnect the radio.”

As the race progressed, Alonso began a recovery drive, overtaking slower cars including Oliver Bearman but Hadjar who was struggling with an engine issue throughout the second half of the race, nonetheless defended aggressively, frustrating the seasoned driver.

On lap 36, Alonso had a clear chance to overtake Hadjar into the Turn 7 left-hander, but the Racing Bulls covered off the inside of that corner all the way to the Turn 8 right-hander.

Hadjar later took a rather aggressive defensive line to the inside of Turn 10, forcing Alonso to back off, as the rookie driver followed up his defence through the braking zones of Turn 14, 16 and 17.

Alonso ultimately executed a clean pass on lap 37 and cheekily radioed his race engineer that he has awarded Hadjar “Trophy for the hero of the race” before adding “we lost five seconds with the hero of the day, congrats.”

Fernando Alonso lashes out at Lewis Hamilton for driving with no brakes

The next dramatic Fernando Alonso team radio moment happened during the closing stages of the race after a close battle with his former teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton was battling his own issues as his Ferrari suffered front brake failure, forcing him to nurse the car around the challenging Marina Bay Circuit.

The Aston Martin was hot on Ferrari’s tail, gaining time as Hamilton struggled to control his brake issues and Alonso vocally expressed his disbelief and concern over the situation via team radio, angrily criticizing race officials for allowing it.

An angry Alonso said over the radio: “I can not fucking believe it. I can not fucking believe it. I can not fucking believe it. I can not fucking believe it. Is it safe to drive with no brakes?”

When informed the team were looking into it and praised him for recovering to eighth, Alonso replied: “Should be fucking P7. You can not drive. No respect for the red flag yesterday (FP3). Today, free track for them. Maybe too much”

“For me, you can not drive when the car is not safe. Sometimes they try to disqualify me with no mirror, and now you have no brakes and everything is fine? I doubt it.”

Hamilton’s brake troubles saw him exceed track limits multiple times as he tried to defend his position, ultimately triggering a five-second time penalty after the race.

The penalty demoted Hamilton to eighth, promoting Alonso to seventh place, confirming Alonso’s strong finish and giving Aston Martin valuable championship points.
