Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo shattered Phillip Island lap record on his final qualifying attempt to seize Australian MotoGP pole position from Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi.
The outstanding performance marked Quartararo’s fifth pole position of the season and affirmed his status as one of the top contenders in the championship.
Bezzecchi had been leading the session and had even set a new track record in Friday’s practice with a lap of 1:26.492, but the Frenchman delivered when it mattered most denying the Italian what looked like a certain pole position until the very end.
Bezzecchi faced setbacks during his attempts due to traffic issues; notably, he was impeded by fellow riders Francesco Bagnaia and Luca Marini during crucial laps, prompting an investigation into the incident.
As Bezzecchi battled with these obstacles, Fabio Quartararo who started from tenth position on the grid at the beginning of Q2, unleashed a phenomenal lap that shattered the existing Phillip Island lap record with a time of 1’26.465.
The remarkable performance ultimately denied Bezzecchi Australian MotoGP pole position by a razor-thin margin of just 0.031 seconds.
Meanwhile, home favorite Jack Miller secured third place on the grid with a time only 0.243 seconds behind Quartararo, ensuring a double Yamaha front-row.
