
The groundbreaking Honda 2026 F1 power unit, the RA626H, was launched in partnership with Aston Martin Formula 1 team but key design elements were strategically concealed.
The reveal which took place in Tokyo showcased the Japanese manufacturer’s latest engineering marvel designed specifically to comply with the sport’s transformative new power unit regulation.
The event, attended by high-profile figures including Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll and Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali, also marked the launch Honda’s new logo alongside a plain green 2026 F1 show car.
The RA626H represents Honda’s adaptation to the radically revised 2026 F1 power unit rules, which aim to balance sustainability, performance, and cost efficiency while shifting the power dynamic toward electrification.
At its core, this power unit retains the familiar 1.6-liter V6 turbocharged internal combustion engine (ICE) configuration that has defined the hybrid era since 2014, but with significant tweaks to align with environmental mandates.
The ICE’s compression ratio has been reduced from a maximum of 18:1 to 16:1, allowing for better compatibility with 100% sustainable fuels—fully carbon-neutral synthetic fuels that eliminate the need for traditional fossil-based gasoline.
Honda’s engineers have optimized the ICE for high-revving efficiency, targeting outputs around 400-500 kW (approximately 540-670 horsepower), though exact figures remain undisclosed as development continues.

A monumental change in the RA626H is the complete removal of the MGU-H (Motor Generator Unit – Heat), the component responsible for harvesting energy from exhaust gases to spin the turbocharger and reduce lag.
Previously a complex and costly element that contributed minimally to lap times—estimated at just 0.01 seconds per lap—the MGU-H’s elimination simplifies the power unit architecture, cuts development expenses, and lowers the center of gravity by relocating components.
This shift places greater reliance on a conventional wastegate and blow-off valve system for turbo management, harking back to pre-hybrid turbo designs while maintaining anti-lag capabilities through advanced electronics.
The turbocharger itself features a smaller, more compact single-scroll turbine paired with a high-flow compressor, designed to spool up rapidly under the new regulations’ reduced exhaust energy recovery demands.
Honda’s decision to blur sections of the lower assembly in reveal images—likely encompassing the turbo housing, intercooler integration, and exhaust manifold configuration—suggests proprietary innovations in airflow management and thermal efficiency that could prove decisive on track.

Compensating for the MGU-H’s absence is a dramatically enhanced MGU-K (Motor Generator Unit – Kinetic), which now delivers a staggering 350 kW (475 horsepower)—nearly three times the current 120 kW limit.
Positioned directly on the crankshaft, this beefed-up electric motor will provide instantaneous torque for superior acceleration, overtaking maneuvers, and straight-line speed, transforming race strategies around energy deployment.
The Honda 2026 F1 power unit also integrates an advanced high-voltage battery pack and control electronics optimized for rapid charge-discharge cycles, with cooling systems refined through extensive dyno testing at their Sakura facility in Japan.
This electric boost ensures the overall power unit output approaches or exceeds 1,000 horsepower, with roughly 50% derived from electrical sources—a stark contrast to the current 20% hybrid contribution.
Honda has emphasized reliability in the RA626H, with President Koji Watanabe noting the “very short timeline” for in-vehicle validation ahead of the Barcelona pre-season test from January 26-30.
“The regulations in 2026 are very challenging,” Watanabe said. “It’s difficult. It’s challenging. That’s why we would like to take it on.
“Currently, Sakura is also working hard on the reliability testing, and working on a bench testing, and we want to really bring onto in-vehicle testing.
“We are running on a very short timeline, but we want to make sure that we are fully prepared for it.”
