Unveiled: Williams throwback livery for F1 United States GP

The striking Williams throwback livery was unveiled at the Lone Star Ranch in Austin ahead of this weekend’s Formula 1 United States Grand Prix.

The special livery pays homage to one of the most iconic and successful periods in the team’s recent history by drawing direct inspiration from the Williams FW24 car that raced in the 2002 Formula 1 season.

That year marked a high point for the Grove based outfit when drivers Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher pushed the team to second place in the constructors’ championship behind Ferrari, making it a fitting choice to celebrate the long-standing partnership with title sponsor Atlassian which was founded the same year.

The retro design predominantly features the classic blue and white color scheme of the Williams 2002 FW24, which is instantly recognizable and beloved by fans worldwide.

Williams has emphasized that this livery is not just a tribute to their past success but a visual representation of shared values with Atlassian—teamwork, innovation, and resilient determination.

The celebration of this strategic partnership embodies how both the team and their sponsor have navigated and thrived amid the rapid and relentless changes in the sport since 2002.

The Williams 2002 FW24 was the only car besides Ferrari to claim a race victory and to hold the fastest lap record during the Italian Grand Prix, which adds profound historical weight to the choice of design.

The 2025 rendition of this livery adorns the current FW47 car driven by Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon.

The classic blue and white tones dominate car surfaces, interspersed with subtle accents of silver streaks along the nose and flanks that mirror the styling details of the original FW24.

This color balance creates a nostalgic yet visually stunning effect that connects the rich heritage of Williams with the technological sophistication of modern Formula 1 cars.

The design tactfully preserves the team’s usual branding and sponsors while elevating the car’s appearance with this elegant nod to history.

This approach also aligns with Williams’ broader 2025 campaign, which has seen impressive progression, scoring 102 points and showcasing the team’s ambitions to climb higher on the grid.

“Atlassian and Williams were both founded on teamwork,” said Atlassian CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes. “Our beginnings were similar, two mates with big ideas and a hell of a lot of passion, ready to do something big.

“So we’re thrilled that Atlassian can now partner with Williams as they drive towards a new era of greatness, using technology to help power their move up the grid.

“Williams throwback livery celebrates both teams’ legacy and the bright future ahead.”

Juan Pablo Montoya who drove the iconic FW24 to seven podium finishes added: “It’s incredible to think about how much has changed in F1 since 2002, but the key ingredients for success have remained the same: teamwork, innovation, and a relentless determination to succeed.

“Williams has always stood for these values, and it’s clear that in Atlassian, they have a partner that shares them. The throwback livery looks amazing and is a great way to celebrate this partnership and the team’s ambition to return to the top step of the podium.”

Carlos Sainz who recently claimed Williams first podium since 2021 said: “The FW47 looks incredible in this 2002 retro livery, which I’m sure will be a fan favourite.

“I can’t wait to drive it at Austin this weekend. I’ve seen first-hand how Atlassian’s software and approach to teamwork is helping move the team forward, and I’m excited about what the future holds.”
