Lewis Hamilton seals maiden Ferrari win at Barcelona GP as Kimi Antonelli retires

Lewis Hamilton finally stormed to his maiden Ferrari victory at the 2026 Formula 1 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, while Kimi Antonelli retired late in the race.

The seven-time world champion pulled off a three-stop strategy gamble and perfectly timed a late VSC to ultimately cross the finish line 19.561 seconds ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell, marking his 106th career grand prix win.

Antonelli, meanwhile, suffered an engine failure just after overtaking Russell late in the race which forced the young Italian to retire, effectively handing Lando Norris first podium of the season for McLaren.

When the lights went out for the 66-lap contest, Russell got off to the perfect start from pole position, holding off Hamilton’s aggressive opening lap move on soft tires while the Ferrari driver successfully cut off Antonelli’s attempt to gain ground.

Isack Hadjar, who started sixth, slowed off the line and was alarmingly overtaken by eight cars, while Charles Leclerc expertly weaved his way up from 10th to sixth position through the early laps.

Hamilton took an early pit stop on Lap 12 to swap his soft tyres for hards, before Mercedes responded on the following lap with hard tires for Russell, though the British driver expressed worry that his stop exposed him to Antonelli’s charging pace.

The pit cycle slashed Russell’s gap over Hamilton in half with Antonelli back in third position after his own stop to bolt on the hard tyres.

With Hamilton sitting 2.3 seconds behind Russell, the seven-time champion communicated over team radio that they were on Plan C, indicating Ferrari’s willingness to adapt their strategy based on evolving race conditions.

Hamilton pitted for the second time on Lap 28 with Mercedes deciding not to follow suit immediately due to the threat from reigning champion Lando Norris, who was running strongly in fourth place.

Midway through the race, Antonelli closed in right behind Russell, who was forced to fend off his aggressive teammate, as Norris closed the gap to the Mercedes duo.

Russell was called in for fresh hard tyres on Lap 37 before Antonelli followed suit, vaulting Hamilton into the lead.

Lap 40 saw home favourite Fernando Alonso pull off to the side in the grass at Turn 9 after a suspected battery issue, marking a double DNF for Aston Martin with Lance Stroll already retired just six laps into the Barcelona Grand Prix.

The incident triggered a yellow flag and the subsequent virtual safety car became the moment that the race was decided.

Russell and Antonelli had just pitted for their two-stop strategy prior to the VSC deployment, while Hamilton pitted under the virtual safety car for his final tire change and saved approximately 10 seconds, a crucial advantage that allowed him to hold the race lead.

With clean air ahead, Hamilton was able to stretch his lead comfortably, recording lap times 1.3 to 1.5 seconds faster than Russell as he pulled clear for what would become an emotional triumph.

Behind, Russell and Antonelli found themselves in lock-step, with lap after lap seeing the two drivers running next to each other as Antonelli consistently attacked Russell for track position.

Antonelli was warned about track limits with a black-and-white flag, but that didn’t do much to keep him from pushing his car to the absolute limit to extend his championship gap over his teammate.

It took until Lap 61 for Antonelli to finally overtake Russell for second despite damaging his front wing, however, a lap later Antonelli’s car suddenly stopped on track, bringing an abrupt and dramatic end to the championship leader’s race.

At the exact same time Charles Leclerc experienced a problem with his power steering and went off track into the gravel, ending the day for the Monesgaque as teammate Lewis Hamilton seals maiden Ferrari win in historic fashion.
