Mercedes’ George Russell overcame an aggressive early challenge from Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and a chaotic late safety car to claim Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix Sprint victory.
The 19-lap showdown at the iconic Shanghai International circuit saw the British driver fend off both Ferraris to take the checkered flag 0.6 seconds ahead of Charles Leclerc, while Hamilton ultimately settled in third.
This marked Russell’s second win of the season following his Australian GP triumph, propelling him further ahead in the early championship standings.
From the moment the lights went out, the race ignited into a spectacle of raw speed and strategic daring, with pole-sitter George Russell in the Mercedes W17 making a flawless launch off the line to hold his advantage through the first sector.
However, Lewis Hamilton unleashed Ferrari’s superior launch characteristics as he rocketed from fourth to second by the end of the opening lap before pouncing on Russell with a bold outside move at the high-speed Turn 9 right-hander to seize the lead.
Russell, undeterred, countered immediately on the following lap, diving inside at Turn 14’s hairpin to reclaim first, initiating a mesmerizing six-lap duel that saw the pair swap positions no fewer than six times in the frenetic opening stint.
Meanwhile, Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli endured a slow start, dropping to eighth off the line, before clashing wheels with Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar at Turn 6. The Italian driver was later slapped with a 10-second time penalty from the stewards for causing the collision.
Lando Norris in the McLaren MCL40 showed flashes of pace from third on the grid, briefly holding station before dropping back slightly as he struggled with understeer in the high-speed esses.
By lap 5, Russell had edged ahead decisively after blocking Hamilton’s repeated attempts as his former teammate began reporting front-left tire wear over team radio, a vulnerability exposed by Ferrari’s higher-downforce setup that prioritized corner speed over longevity.
Leclerc, meanwhile, dispatched Norris for third on lap seven with a clinical DRS pass on the back straight, signaling Scuderia’s double threat as the race approached its halfway mark.
Just as the race appeared to settle into a rythm, Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg pulled off at the exit of Turn 16 on lap 13 with smoke billowing from his power unit, triggering yellow flags and ultimately a full safety car to recover the stricken car.
The late intervention upended the race entirely, bunching the field and erasing Russell’s four-second lead over Leclerc, who had inherited second after Hamilton’s pace faltered.
Most drivers pitted for fresh soft tires during the safety car period, with Mercedes executing a strategic masterstroke by double-stacking Russell and Antonelli flawlessly on lap 14.
Antonelli served his penalty seamlessly in the process, dropping to seventh upon rejoining but armed with superior rubber for the final stint.
Ferrari opted for a riskier double-stack for Hamilton and Leclerc, but a slight hesitation in the second pit stop shuffled the seven-time world champion behind Norris temporarily.
At the lap 16 restart, drama peaked as Leclerc suffered a wheelspin exiting Turn 14, allowing Russell to bolt away with a 0.8-second instant advantage that he nursed meticulously over the final three laps to ultimately take Chinese Grand Prix Sprint victory.
Behind them, Hamilton recovered momentum and dispatched Norris on lap 17 with a late-braking masterclass into Turn 1 to claim third, completing a double podium for Ferrari.
Antonelli, who despite , showcased raw speed by carving through the midfield pack, overtaking Haas’ Oliver Bearman and RB’s Liam Lawson on the restart with bold outside lines into Turn 1.
Antonelli’s recovery drive was one of the day’s highlights as the 20-year-old overcame his penalty and poor start to cross the line fifth, edging out Oscar Piastri in the second McLaren.
Further down, Red Bull endured a frustrating afternoon with Max Verstappen salvaging ninth after a slow start, while teammate Hadjar tumbled to 15th after earlier contact with Antonelli.
