Oscar Piastri dominated chaotic second F1 Singapore GP practice that saw multiple crashes including a dramatic tangle between McLaren teammate Lando Norris and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in the pits.
The FP2 session started with high anticipation as teams looked to capitalize on the track conditions at the iconic Marina Bay Street Circuit known for its tight corners, unforgiving walls, and combination of high-speed straights and technical sections.
The narrow layout of the circuit leaves little room for driver error, and this was borne out in the session as four drivers were involved in incidents.
The session was heavily disrupted by two separate red flags caused by crashes involving Mercedes’ George Russell and Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson.
About 17 minutes into the session, Russell lost the rear of his car under oversteer at Turn 16, resulting in a high-speed collision with the barriers. The impact caused significant damage to the front end, including the loss of his front wing and a puncture.
Russell reported the incident as “weird” over the radio and was able to drive back slowly to the pits, but he could not rejoin the session.
The crash triggered a red flag that lasted about 12 minutes to repair the barriers and clear debris, severely limiting running time for many drivers.
After the session resumed, it was not long before Lawson lost rear grip under acceleration at Turn 17 and slammed the right side of his Racing Bulls car into the wall, bringing out the second red flag.
The impact broke the rear right suspension, forcing Lawson to stop at the pit entry, ending his running early with only 10 timed laps.
The second stoppage cut into the semifinal portion of the session, leaving less opportunity for teams to refine their setups for qualifying and race simulations.
As the session resumed once again with 13 minutes remaining, further drama unfolded in the pit lane after Charles Leclerc was released from his garage into the path of Lando Norris, who was driving down the lane.
Leclerc crashed into Norris, damaging his front wing, forcing McLaren to quickly push him back into the garage for repairs. This incident led to a post-session investigation for Leclerc and his team, as Ferrari was found responsible for the unsafe release.
Amid the chaos, Oscar Piastri set a best lap time of 1:30.714, which stood as the benchmark by the end of second F1 Singapore GP practice.
Following Piastri was Racing Bulls’ rookie Isack Hadjar who finished just 0.132 seconds off the benchmark, demonstrating remarkable speed and adaptability in his first outing at Singapore.
Reigning F1 world champion Max Verstappen placed his Red Bull in third with a lap of 1:30.857, only 0.143 seconds shy of Piastri’s time.

Meanwhile, FP1 pace-setter Fernando Alonso continued to impress after claiming the fourth quickest time, indicating a remarkable performance upturn for Aston Martin this weekend.
Lando Norris recovered from the pit lane incident to complete qualifying simulation runs with the fifth fastest lap of 1:31.197, about half a second off his teammate Piastri.
Lance Stroll slotted the second Aston Martin in sixth, closely followed by Haas’ Esteban Ocon and Williams’ Carlos Sainz.
The Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton finished ninth and tenth respectively, with Hamilton’s best lap set on medium tyres rather than the soft, which several drivers used to post competitive times.
Mercedes struggled immensely, with Russell’s crash limiting his running to just six laps which left him at the bottom of the timesheets, while teammate Kimi Antonelli only managed 18th.
Sauber’s Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto delivered midfield performances in 14th and 15th, while Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto took 16th and 19th.
