Marc Marquez recovers to take German MotoGP Sprint victory, Fabio Quartararo claims 1st podium

In treacherous wet conditions at Sachsenring, Marc Marquez rebounded from a slow start to snatch German MotoGP Sprint victory from Marco Bezzecchi while Fabio Quartararo made a remarkable return to the podium.

The Saturday afternoon race unfolded as a thrilling and dramatic spectacle marked by challenging wet conditions with a host of riders displaying grit, tactical intelligence, and technical mastery.

The weather played a pivotal role with persistent rain saturating the track and forcing all riders to opt for the soft rear wet tire paired with a medium front, a combination that reflected the expectation of consistently wet conditions throughout the race.

As the lights went out, Marc Marquez launched aggressively from pole but his ambition got the better of him at Turn 1 after braking too late on the slippery surface and ran wide, dropping from first to fifth.

This opened the door for Marco Bezzecchi who seized the lead with clinical precision, followed closely by Franco Morbidelli and Fabio Quartararo. The Italian duo looked set to capitalize on Marquez’s misfortune, with Morbidelli in particular eager to make up for a difficult qualifying session earlier in the day.

The opening laps were fraught with tension as riders struggled to find grip and rhythm while Bezzecchi established a gap at the front, his Aprilia handling the wet conditions with apparent ease.

Morbidelli slotted into second but his race would soon unravel in dramatic fashion. On lap three the VR46 rider lost the rear at Turn 8 and crashed out spectacularly, cartwheeling through the gravel.

With Morbidelli out, Fabio Quartararo inherited second place after a spirited charge from seventh and a series of bold overtakes in the opening corners. The Frenchman’s pace was impressive, setting consecutive fastest laps as he tried to close the gap to Bezzecchi.

However, the relentless pressure from behind soon materialized in the form of Marc Marquez who had begun his methodical recovery through the field by dispatching Johann Zarco, whose decision to run a medium rear tyre ultimately compromised his race pace.

Later on Lap 5, a decisive move saw Marquez move past Fabio di Giannantonio to take fourth, and the Spaniard was now in the hunt for the top spot.

As the race reached its midpoint, Bezzecchi continued to lead while Quartararo unable to match the relentless pace of the charging Ducati focused on defending third from Di Giannantonio who was eager to add another strong result to his growing résumé.

The race’s climax came on the final lap, where Marquez executed a perfectly timed pass on Bezzecchi on the start-finish straight using the slipstream and held the lead through the subsequent turns to cross the finish line first by 0.938 seconds.

Marquez’s German MotoGP Sprint victory marked his tenth Sprint win of the season, further extending his championship lead to 78 points over his brother Alex who remains second.

Marco Bezzecchi was forced to settle for second, while Fabio Quartararo maintained his composure to claim third, marking Yamaha’s first Sprint podium of the season.

Di Giannantonio finished fourth while Jack Miller delivered his best Sprint performance of the season after guiding his Prima Pramac Yamaha to fifth in the treacherous conditions.

Brad Binder emerged as the top KTM rider in sixth after a measured and mature ride while Johann Zarco struggled to bring his tire up to optimal temperature to finish seventh for Castrol Honda LCR.

Alex Marquez, riding with a hand injury, was unable to replicate his usual form and finished eighth for BK8 Gresini Ducati, marking a rare occasion where the Marquez brothers did not occupy the top two spots in a Sprint race.

KTM rookie Pedro Acosta, endured a rollercoaster race after an early off-track excursion but fought back valiantly to claim ninth at the flag ahead of Fermin Aldeguer.
