Marc Marquez led his younger brother Alex Marquez and Fabio Di Giannantonio to win the 2026 German MotoGP Sprint in a historic Ducati 1-2-3 podium sweep.
In doing so, Marc sealed his 19th career Sprint victory and cut his championship points deficit to just 32 points behind Jorge Martin as Marco Bezzecchi withdrew from the remainder of Sachsenring weekend following qualifying crash.
The Spaniard entered the Sprint as the clear favourite, and when the lights were extinguished to signal the start, he did precisely what was expected though not without a moment of drama.
Marc bobbled slightly off the line, his front wheel lifting fractionally and threatening to unsettle his launch, but the champion reacted with the instinctive brilliance and retained the lead into Turn 1, with his brother Alex tucking in directly behind him.
Further back in the field, Ai Ogura snatched third place from Di Giannantonio through the opening corners and for a moment the Trackhouse Aprilia rider seemed to momentarily disrupt the front-row Ducati formation.
However, Di Giannantonio responded with an aggressive overtake move on Ogura at the fast Turn 7, restoring himself to the podium position.
The opening exchanges also saw Jorge Martin advance from his eighth place grid slot to sixth, while Fabio Quartararo and Pedro Acosta locked in close combat further down the order in eighth and ninth.
By the end of the first few laps, the top ten had largely crystallised into the order it would maintain for much of the Sprint: Marc Marquez led his brother Alex, with Di Giannantonio third, Ogura fourth, Raul Fernandez fifth, Martin sixth, Bagnaia seventh, Quartararo and Acosta continuing their close battle behind.
Franco Morbidelli ran in tenth place before crashing at Turn 1 on Lap 7, marking the first retirement of the race.
By Lap 11 the Marquez duo had established a 0.9s lead over Di Giannantonio who faded away, but rallied in the closing stages to threaten Alex Marquez’s runner-up spot.
However, there was no realistic overtaking opportunity and Marc ultimately crossed the line 0.3 seconds ahead of Alex, while Di Giannantonio had to settle for third, 0.8s adrift.
Trackhouse duo of Ai Ogura and Raul Fernandez finished fourth and fifth with factory rider Jorge Martin making it three Aprilias into the top six.
Francesco Bagnaia came home in seventh, followed by KTM’s Pedro Acosta and Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo, while Diogo Moreira rounded out the top 10.
