George Russell won the dramatic 2026 Formula 1 season opener in Melbourne, propelling Mercedes to the top of both the drivers’ and constructors’ standings.
The British driver finished ahead of teammate Kimi Antonelli with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completing the podium in third place, setting the stage for an intriguing championship battle as the grid adapts to revolutionary changes in car design, power units, and aerodynamics.
Russell takes the lead atop the drivers standings with 25 points, followed by Antonelli on 18 as Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton and defending champion Lando Norris round out the top five.
Max Verstappen takes sixth after his phenomenal charge from 20th following a crash in qualifying.
In the constructors standings, Mercedes dominates with a maximum 43 points as Ferrari trails on 27, McLaren, Red Bull Racing and Haas complete the top five. Aston Martin was the only team that left Melbourne without a point.
