George Russell led a Mercedes 1-2 finish in the opening practice for the third Formula 1 round in Japan, leading the field by a narrow margin.
Russell topped the timesheets with a 1:31.666, beating team-mate Kimi Antonelli by just 0.026s, while reigning World Champion Lando Norris was close behind in third as the top three were separated by over a tenth of a second.
Norris’s McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri was fourth fastest, just 0.2 seconds off the pace, followed by the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton in fifth and sixth respectively.
