The striking black and silver McLaren 2026 F1 testing livery was unveiled on renders of the new MCL40 ahead of the crucial private Barcelona Formula 1 shakedown test.
As the reigning constructors’ and drivers’ champions following Lando Norris‘s title-winning performance in Abu Dhabi last year, the Woking-based squad is entering a transformative era with this reveal, signaling their intent to defend both crowns under radically new technical regulations.
The monochromatic design, which prioritizes functionality for initial reliability checks over aesthetic flair, features prominent sponsor placements including title partner Mastercard, while subtle papaya orange accents highlight the racing numbers of Norris (‘1’) and teammate Oscar Piastri (’81’).
The stealth-mode livery will make its track debut at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya during the closed-door shakedown from January 26 to 30, where McLaren plans to run on days two or three to maximize development time.
“There’s been so much work behind the design, the realisation, the build of the 2026 cars,” said McLaren team boss Andrea Stella.
“What I can remember for me, it’s almost unprecedented, not only in terms of the changes themselves, because I think never before there’s been such a huge and simultaneous change of chassis, power unit and tyres.
“But even the sheer volume of redesigning that went through the last 20 months, I would say, at McLaren has been probably the biggest design or in general dealing with a new car project that I was a part of.
“This all makes it extremely interesting to see how the cars will perform, how the competitiveness order will be somehow mixed up. We are champions, but we don’t carry the being champions into ’26. Everyone will start from zero.”
The timed reveal of McLaren 2026 F1 testing livery could not be more poignant, arriving just as Formula 1’s 2026 season preparation intensifies with the Barcelona event marking the first collective on-track outing for the grid’s all-new machinery.
Teams are permitted three days of running across the five-day window, focusing primarily on system reliability, power unit integration, and basic mileage accumulation rather than outright performance laps, given the unprecedented overhaul in chassis, aerodynamics and power units.
By opting to delay their Barcelona shakedown until mid-week, McLaren underscores a strategic philosophy of earning every advantage on merit, ensuring the MCL40 arrives track-ready without compromising late-stage refinements.
McLaren will launch their official livery on 9th February at the Bahrain International circuit.
