Jorge Martin produced a sensational lights‑to‑flag romp to claim victory at the 2026 French MotoGP Sprint at Le Mans, while Marc Marquez suffered a huge crash in the closing stages.
The 13‑lap Tissot Sprint at Bugatti Circuit delivered heart‑in‑mouth drama and a flared‑wing title‑shot by Martin, who carved his way from eighth on the grid to ultimately take the chequered flag with over a second advantage on Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia and Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi.
From the very first lap, Martin’s Aprilia RS‑GP26 flickered with menace, as the Spaniard threaded his way through the opening chaos with a mix of instinct and calculated aggression.
Polesitter Francesco Bagnaia held station off the line, but Martin’s switch efforts and tighter lines exiting curbs and chicanes quickly lifted him into the lead group.
By Turn 3 the 2024 MotoGP champion was already in the mix with the top three, and a daring late‑braking move on the official Le Mans “S” section allowed him to slippast both Bezzecchi and a momentarily wide Bagnaia, planting the Aprilia in the number‑one spot on the first lap.
What followed was a masterclass in pace management and tyre discipline as Martin opened a gap that never dipped below half a second and at times stretched to over a second.
Bagnaia slipped to third after Bezzecchi took advantage of the Lap 2 melee involving Luca Marini and Jonas Folger who crashed out, however, the double world champion reclaimed second on Lap 3.
Teammate Marc Marquez endured a slow start that saw him drop to fifth and later seventh, while VR46’s Fabio Di Giannantonio became the third rider to crash on Lap 4 as the Ducatis appeared to struggle with grip.
Lap 5 saw Enea Bastianini crash in the final sector, triggering yellow flags, before Franco Morbidelli tumbled at the same corner a lap later.
By Lap 7, Martin had extended his advantage over Bagnaia to over a second as the pack behind seemed to have settled into a rhythm up until the penultimate lap, when Marc Marquez crashed out of contention in a brutal high‑side incident that capped Le Mans MotoGP Sprint highlights.
Marc was pushing hard through the final sequence of turns, seeking to claw back positions, but a lean into a fast right‑hand bend stepped out the rear tyre suddenly, snapping the Ducati upright and sending Marquez hurtling across the tarmac in a high‑speed slide.
The Spaniard emerged from the incident with a heavy limp and was later taken to the medical centre, marking another painful chapter in a season where he has struggled to deliver results.
The thriller culminated with Jorge Martin winning his second Sprint of the season ahead of Bagnaia, while Bezzecchi rounded out the podium 2.786s behind his Aprilia teammate.
KTM’s Pedro Acosta finished fourth, followed by home favourite Fabio Quartararo in fifth. Joan Mir was the best Honda in sixth, while Ai Ogura, Alex Marquez and rookie Diogo Moreira wrapped up the final Sprint points.
