Jonathan Rea’s return has been officially confirmed with the six-time World Superbike Champion declared fit to race at the Italian WorldSBK 2025.
This decision comes after a rigorous recovery period following a serious injury that kept the Northern Irish rider out of action for nearly three months forcing him to miss the opening rounds of the 2025 season.
Jonathan Rea’s return for the Italian WorldSBK 2025 at Cremona not only signals his physical readiness but also reignites hopes for a competitive season ahead despite the challenges that still lie ahead for the veteran racer.
Rea’s absence from the grid was the result of a highside crash during pre-season testing at Phillip Island in February where he sustained multiple fractures to his left foot.
The severity of the injury required immediate surgery and an extended period of rehabilitation, sidelining the 38-year old rider for the Australian, Portimao and Assen rounds.
This was a tough blow for both Rea and the Pata Yamaha team who had high expectations following a promising winter testing program. Throughout his recovery he remained focused on returning to full fitness, working closely with medical professionals and his team to ensure a safe and effective comeback.
The decision to allow Rea to race at Cremona was not taken lightly. Initially, he was cleared for participation in Free Practice 1 (FP1) on Friday with the stipulation that his fitness would be reassessed following the session.

After successfully completing FP1 and a thorough medical review the seasoned WorldSBK rider was officially declared fit to compete for the remainder of the weekend.
Jonathan Rea’s return to the track was met with anticipation and excitement but it also came with realistic expectations. After such a lengthy layoff, regaining race fitness and adapting to the demands of WorldSBK competition was always going to be a challenge.
In an interview at Cremona, Rea acknowledged the difficulties he faced: “It’s been a difficult day but firstly my foot feels fine riding. I had a couple of areas where my foot was in the wrong position and when I ride with my big toe on the foot peg it feels quite painful, but generally it’s fine.
”Of course, it’s been a long time off the bike, and physically, I didn’t feel amazing. However, I expected that to an extent and need some race fitness back.
”The R1 is quite different to when I last rode it and we worked through FP1 and FP2 with the same tyre setups to find the rhythm, and still I didn’t feel fully comfortable.”
Despite the challenges, Rea’s determination was evident. He finished FP1 in 17th position and FP2 in 21st with a best lap time that was over a second off the pace set by the session leader.

These results, while not reflective of his championship-winning pedigree, were understandable given his time away from the bike and the physical demands of the sport.
Rea himself noted that the focus was on regaining confidence and comfort on the Yamaha R1 with the team working diligently to make adjustments that would help him stop the bike more effectively and reach the apex with greater assurance.
For the Pata Yamaha team, Jonathan Rea’s return is a welcome development especially given the strong performances by Locatelli and the overall competitiveness of the Yamaha package in the early rounds.
The team is optimistic that as their star rider regains race fitness and adapts to the latest developments on the R1 he will be able to contribute valuable points and insights as the season progresses.
