Helmut Marko has finally broken his silence on the abrupt and unprecedented Christian Horner sacking, revealing ‘factors’ and who really ousted the former Red Bull Team Principal.
The move which ended Horner’s two-decade tenure at the pinnacle of F1, sent shockwaves across the sport, prompting closely held discussions and speculations about the catalysts that resulted in the British executive’s shocking downfall.
As principal architect of Red Bull’s success, Horner amassed eight Formula 1 World Championship titles and oversaw the rise of luminaries like Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel. His firing, however, signals the end of an era and the dawn of uncertainty for the F1 powerhouse.
The saga reached its climax immediately after the British Grand Prix, just as the Milton Keynes based outfit should have been consolidating their focus on track performance and title ambitions.
Instead, in a decision handed down by Red Bull’s upper management—chief among them Oliver Mintzlaff, the head of Red Bull GmbH’s sporting divisions—Horner was summoned to a meeting in London and informed of his immediate release from operational duties.
The brevity of Red Bull’s official announcement which offered no explicit justification only stoked further intrigue: “Red Bull has released Christian Horner from his operational duties with effect from today (9 July 2025) and has appointed Laurent Mekies as CEO of Red Bull Racing.”
For a figure as integral to Red Bull’s F1 fabric as Horner, such a swift and unceremonious exit was almost unthinkable.
In his first substantive interview with Sky Deutschland following Christian Horner sacking, Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko revealed performance was the main issue that led to the brutal departure.
“The decision was made by Oliver Mintzlaff (managing director of Red Bull GmbH)” Marko said. “We informed Christian Horner of this on Tuesday in London after the Silverstone race, at the same time officially thanking him for these 20 years and for these eight World Championship titles.
“This was the result of various factors, but above all, the performance wasn’t quite as good as it could have been.
“Fortunately, we were able to bring Laurent Mekies into the family. His responsibilities will be significantly reduced, with the main focus being on racing.”

Marko’s words only partly lift the veil on the internal deliberations that culminated in Horner’s dismissal, echoing the multifaceted tensions percolating within the team for the better part of 18 months.
The seeds of Horner’s ouster were sown amid a perfect storm of on-track stagnation, personnel exodus, and persistent controversy. Dating back to early 2024, Horner found himself embroiled in allegations of inappropriate behavior from a female colleague.
Although exhaustive internal investigations by Red Bull GmbH reportedly cleared him of wrongdoing, the episode inflicted lasting damage on both Horner’s authority and the Red Bull brand.
The leaks of alleged text messages relating to the matter, regardless of their veracity, were humiliating for both parties and cast a lingering shadow as the season unfolded.
Within the Red Bull paddock and the vast Milton Keynes headquarters, loyalties fractured as senior figures aligned with Horner were also sidelined.
The departures of key technical visionaries most notably legendary engineer Adrian Newey (who moved to Aston Martin), as well as sporting director Jonathan Wheatley (to Sauber), further destabilized the organization.
These resignations reportedly referenced both the environment fostered by the controversies and concerns over Horner’s future as contributing factors.
Several sources have suggested that Red Bull’s upper management was dissatisfied with how the wider team handled the turbulent period and opted for a sweeping reset—one that necessitated starting from the very top.
