Francesco Bagnaia delivered a dominant performance to claim Japanese MotoGP Sprint victory over his Ducati teammate Marc Marquez, as dramatic Jorge Martin crash wiped out several riders including Aprilia partner Marco Bezzecchi.
From the very start of the 12-lap sprint, Bagnaia displayed exceptional skill and control, maintaining his pole position advantage and leading every lap with unrelenting pace.
At the race’s onset, Pecco made a clean getaway from pole position and immediately pulled away from the pack.
Behind him, the factory Honda of Joan Mir initially held second place while Pedro Acosta made an impressive climb from fourth on the grid to seize third place from Marc Marquez by Turn 5.
The sprint race quickly turned chaotic at the very first corner, where reigning MotoGP champion Jorge Martin lost control of his Aprilia under heavy braking at Turn 1.
In a heartbreaking twist, Martin collided with his Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi, resulting in a significant crash that forced both riders to retire from the race instantly.
Martin later suffered a displaced collarbone fracture and was ruled out of the upcoming Grand Prix as a result of the crash.
With the track cleared promptly after the incident, Bagnaia continued to extend his lead, impressively pulling a gap to the chasing riders.
By the second lap, Acosta managed to overtake Mir for second place, establishing himself as Bagnaia’s main pursuer.
Despite expectations that Acosta might mount a serious challenge, Bagnaia’s commanding pace kept him comfortably ahead, and by lap five, he had widened his lead to an impressive 1.5 seconds.
Meanwhile, Marquez was engaged in a strategic battle with Mir for several laps before finally overtaking the Honda on lap seven.
Demonstrating his racing acumen, Marquez then passed Acosta a lap later to solidify second place as the KTM rider’s rhythm faltered on the challenging Motegi track surface. However, he could not reduce Bagnaia’s gap to challenge for Japanese MotoGP Sprint victory.
Coming down the final laps, Bagnaia’s lap-by-lap consistency and composure ensured he crossed the finish line first, securing his first sprint race victory of the 2025 MotoGP season and his second career sprint win overall.
Marquez followed in a strong second place, bringing his championship lead to a near-insurmountable margin to clinch the 2025 MotoGP World title. Pedro Acosta completed the podium in third, rewarded for his aggressive start and solid ride throughout.

Other notable performances included Joan Mir, who managed to hold on to fourth place amidst fierce competition against a charging Franco Morbidelli who finished fifth on the Pertamina VR46 Ducati.
Fabio Quartararo, riding the Monster Yamaha YZR-M1, delivered a solid sixth-place finish, proving competitive but unable to challenge the front-runners on this day.
Seventh was claimed by Luca Marini on the Honda HRC Castrol bike, maintaining Honda’s strong presence in the points. Rounding out the top ten were riders Raul Fernandez and Ai Ogura of Trackhouse Aprilia in eighth and ninth respectively, with Alex Marquez finishing tenth.
Alex’s result was pivotal for his brother’s championship aspirations being his closest rival failed to score higher points, bringing the title within Marc’s reach before Sunday’s main race.
Fermin Aldeguer secured eleventh place while Brad Binder claimed twelfth on the Red Bull KTM. Other competitive riders such as Fabio Di Giannantonio, Takaaki Nakagami, Miguel Oliveira, and Maverick Viñales filled out the points-scoring positions.
Notably, the sprint race saw the absence of points for some notable names. Jack Miller, Johann Zarco and Enea Bastianini were caught up in the Mayhem surrounding the Martin-Bezzecchi crash, ultimately constraining their ability to advance in the sprint.
