Max Verstappen narrowly edged Williams’ Carlos Sainz and Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson to claim pole position in a chaotic qualifying session marred by record 6 red flags.
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli qualified fourth, followed closely by teammate George Russell in fifth. Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda secured sixth, while McLaren’s Lando Norris, who faced struggles and touched the wall on a scruffy lap, finished seventh.
Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar qualified eighth ahead of championship leader Oscar Piastri who had to settle for ninth after crashing near Turn 3 with less than four minutes remaining.
Just before Piastri’s incident, Ferrari star Charles Leclerc crashed heavily at Turn 15 ending his hopes to secure a fifth consecutive pole in Baku, leaving him to start from 10th.
Fernando Alonso qualified 11th, just ahead of Lewis Hamilton who despite being fastest in Friday practice, struggled in qualifying and ended up 12th after being knocked out in Q2.
The lower midfield also saw battles and setbacks with Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto, Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, Haas’ Ollie Bearman, Williams’ Alex Albon, Alpine’s Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly all involved in incidents.
