Lando Norris, Isack Hadjar, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll were hit with power unit penalties, dramatically reshaping the starting grid for the Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix.
Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli secured a stunning pole position at Spa-Francorchamps and he will be joined on the front row by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
Norris qualified third but was slapped with an automatic ten-place grid penalty after McLaren fitted a fourth power electronics unit to his car. This means the defending world champion will begin Sunday’s race from 13th, marking his worst starting position since the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Norris’s penalty elevates George Russell to third, followed by the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
Isack Hadjar faces the harshest penalty, a 30-place drop, and will start from 21st for Red Bull after exceeding his allocation on three component categories simultaneously: The internal combustion engine, turbocharger and exhaust system.
Lance Stroll starts 20th despite qualifying last on outright pace. The apparent promotion is the result of more severe penalties applied to his Aston Martin teammate Fernando Alonso and Hadjar, with Stroll’s own ten-place grid drop for exceeding his permitted MGU-K allocation.
Alonso brings up the rear at 22nd after being hit with a 20-place penalty for a new Energy Store, Control Electronics and Power Unit Ancillary Component.
