Antonio Félix da Costa stormed to victory at the inaugural Formula E Madrid E‑Prix, guiding Jaguar TCS Racing to a dominant yet contentious 1‑2 at the historic Circuito del Jarama.
The Portuguese driver claimed his second consecutive win following a breakthrough triumph in Jeddah but not without drama as teammate Mitch Evans fumed over a late-race duel that saw him settle for second just 0.386 seconds adrift.
Starting from third on the grid after a strong qualifying performance, da Costa‘s impeccable execution during the mandatory Formula E Pit Boost propelled him to the front, setting the stage for a defense against mounting pressure in the closing stages.
At the start, pole-sitter Nick Cassidy led off the line in his Citroen, holding a slim advantage over Mahindra’s Nyck de Vries into the first turn, while da Costa wasted no time pressuring the front row from his P3 slot.
Further back, Cupra Kiro’s Dan Ticktum made the best start, slicing through the pack from ninth to fifth behind championship leader Pascal Wehrlein who also started strongly with a jump from sixth to fourth.
Cassidy maintained control through the opening lap, his clean start allowing him to build a small buffer, but the field bunched up quickly as drivers jostled for position amid the mandatory single Attack Mode activation and the looming Pit Boost window that every competitor had to navigate.
Da Costa muscled past De Vries at the end of Lap 1 as the latter proceeded to drop several positions, before his attempt to claw back by overtaking Wehrlein in an overly optimistic move ended up in disaster.
The Dutchman crashed into the rear of Wehrlein’s Porsche and damaged his front wing, dropping to the back of the pack as the stewards slapped him with a 5-second penalty for the incident.
As the race hit its stride around Lap 5, Cassidy’s lead began to erode under the relentless pursuit of da Costa, who was conserving energy meticulously to preserve options for later attacks.
Meanwhile, Jaguar teammate Mitch Evans, starting from 16th after a qualifying misstep, began his charge methodically, picking off cars at the back to slot into the top eight by Lap 9.
The pivotal moment arrived on Lap 12 when Formula E Pit Boost stops began with Antonio Félix da Costa, Pascal Wehrlein, Maximilian Guenther, Sebastien Buemi, Jean-Eric Vergne and de Vries the first to pit.
Da Costa timed his stop to perfection, emerging ahead of Günther and Wehrlein to snatch the lead.
Cassidy’s Citroën team blundered catastrophically by delaying their driver’s Pit Boost, leaving the Kiwi polesitter mired in traffic and tumbling to 17th by race end.
With da Costa now at the helm by Lap 18, having activated his sole Attack Mode flawlessly to stretch his advantage, the focus shifted to the chasing pack where Wehrlein methodically closed in.
Dan Ticktum unleashed a ferocious charge, snatching second from Wehrlein at Turn 2 with Attack Mode and then lunged around the outside at Turn 7 to pressure da Costa directly.
Meanwhile, Mitch Evans closely followed the duo, and going into the final lap he overcame Ticktum setting up a final lap showdown between the Jaguars.
Evans tried to find a way past his teammate as Ticktum still tried to keep in touch, but da Costa held firm against Evans, aggressively blocking him at the final chicane to claim victory at Madrid E‑Prix.
Evans was fuming post-race, feeling that the team should have capitalized on that and the win should have been his – despite the fact he was under investigation for a pit procedure infringement after a mechanic was deemed to be out of position during his stop.
Wehrlein rounded out the podium after edging out Ticktum exiting the final corner, with Mortara taking fifth, Buemi sixth and Dennis impressing in seventh.
