Jake Dennis wins Sanya E-Prix as first Andretti Formula E 1-2 gets dropped after dramatic penalty

Jake Dennis stormed to victory at the 2026 Sanya E-Prix but Felipe Drugovich was stripped of second following post-race penalty, denying Andretti a first-ever Formula E 1-2 finish.

The American squad’s historic achievement only lasted only a handful of hours as red flags and post-race penalties shook up the order at the Chinese round.

The chaotic 37-lap race unfolded with polesitter Dennis leading the field from green as Drugovich followed closely in the second Andretti along with championship leader Mitch Evans.

Behind them, Pascal Wehrlein immediately jumped Taylor Barnard and Nyck de Vries to take fifth before following up with a similar move on Dan Ticktum on Lap 5.

The Porsche driver passed Evans for third a lap later, as Nick Cassidy and de Vries made contact while battling for sixth in the tightly packed field, prompting an investigation.

Wehrlein went on to split the Andrettis on lap 7 with a move past Drugovich at Turn 9, then outdueled Dennis on the run to Turn 11 on Lap 8, securing the lead.

However, Wehrlein overconsumed energy with his early charge and by lap 10 Dennis reclaimed the top spot after deploying his Attack Mode. The pair jostled for position over the next lap before Ticktum surged from fourth to first using his Attack.

The lead continued to change hands as strategy came into play, with Cassidy taking over from Ticktum on Lap 13, followed by Edoardo Mortara who charged from 11th to take the lead on Lap 15.

Cassidy and Mortara traded the top spot up until Lap 18 when Dennis and Drugovich regained control.

However, disaster struck a lap later when Ticktum ran into the rear of Evans at Turn 7, causing substantial damage to both cars, before triggering a massive pile-up which involved the second Jaguar of Antonio Felix da Costa, Zane Maloney’s Lola Yamaha and Sebastien Buemi’s Envision.

The race went back to green on Lap 20 following the red flag, with Dennis leading but Attack Mode activations and pit stops reshuffled the order.

Oliver Rowland jumped from 13th to the lead two laps later, before António Felix da Costa took over on Lap 24 using Attack Mode. However, da Costa was handed a five-second penalty for moving under braking on Norman Nato.

Wehrlein also received a five-second penalty after tagging Nato at Turn 3 on lap 27, which sent the Nissan crashing into the wall, bringing out a full course yellow.

Jake Dennis reclaimed the lead on Lap 34 and held on to claim victory despite another full course yellow on Lap 36 after Oliver Rowland crashed into the wall at Turn 4.

António Felix da Costa finished second but his penalty dropped him to fifth, promoting Felipe Drugovich into the runners up spot, sealing first Andretti Formula E 1-2 finish.

However, Drugovich later copped a five-second penalty for contact with Wehrlein, dropping to fifth behind Da Costa as Pepe Marti vaulted to second, while Nyck de Vries completed the podium.
