Lando Norris stormed to his first win of the 2026 Formula 1 season at the Hungarian Grand Prix after a dramatic late retirement for McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri.
Norris crossed the finish line more than fifteen seconds clear of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, with Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli rounding out the podium in third.
It was also the first grand prix win of 2026 for McLaren as a constructor, a result made all the more significant and bittersweet by the cruel retirement of Oscar Piastri, who had led the majority of the race before a devastating gearbox failure ended his afternoon just fourteen laps from the chequered flag.
Hungarian GP Highlights: As it happened
When the lights went out, polesitter Norris made a clean getaway and appeared to hold his lead into Turn 1, however, Piastri found a way through on his teammate via a cutback at Turn 2, sweeping into the lead.
The Australian instinctively defended his position and held the advantage as the field streamed through the opening corners, with Max Verstappen managing to keep the Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton at bay.
Simultaneously, at the back of the top six George Russell was enduring a nightmare opening to his race: the anti-stall system in his Mercedes activated on the start line, dropping him as low as twenty-first position within the first few metres of the race.
As the first few laps settled into a rhythm, Piastri ran approximately a second clear of Norris with Verstappen holding a comfortable third place.
Behind the Red Bull, Hamilton and Leclerc both on the softer tyre compound found themselves bottled up and unable to deploy their strategic tyre advantage while running in the wake of the Dutchman.
The order behind them was Kimi Antonelli in sixth, followed by Isack Hadjar in the second Red Bull, then Racing Bull pair Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad, with Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg completing the top ten.
Pit stop strategy takes centre stage
By Lap 10 Norris had started closing the gap to Piastri and was pressing McLaren pit wall to allow him to challenge his teammate: “I’m much faster, but yeah… dirty air.”
Verstappen was also reporting damping issues and troublesome gearshifts to Red Bull, problems that were slowing the Dutchman’s efforts to apply pressure to the McLarens ahead.
By Lap 13, Russell had mounted a stunning recovery from twenty-first to eleventh, having dispatched the Williams, Haas, Alpine, Aston Martin and Audi machinery in a sequence of clean, controlled overtakes.
The strategic phase of the race opened on Lap 14 when Hamilton rolled the dice and dove into the pits for a fresh set of hard rubber. He rejoined in ninth place, immediately picking off Lindblad with a sweeping overtake around the outside of Turn 5.
Verstappen responded on the following lap, also switching to hard tyres and rejoining just behind Hamilton. The Dutchman then pulled off a bold move at Turn 1 on lap 16 to re-pass Hamilton though the Red Bull driver was notably unhappy with what he perceived as overly late defence from the Ferrari driver on the brakes.
Lap 17 brought a wave of pit stops among the leaders with Piastri coming in first, followed by Leclerc and then Norris on the following lap. Crucially, Piastri managed to retain his advantage over Norris at the pit exit, keeping the McLaren internal battle alive much to the growing frustration of the Briton.
With Antonelli and Hadjar yet to stop, they temporarily held elevated positions at the front of the road order. Hadjar eventually pitted, leaving Antonelli out on track in an intriguing tactical gamble, attempting what appeared to be an ambitious one-stop strategy on lap 22.
With the field reshuffled and the race entering its middle phase, Norris continued to generate blistering lap times even as Piastri, on fresher tyres, maintained his position ahead.
Hamilton made his second stop of the day on lap 30 for a fresh set of hards, with Leclerc, who had been increasingly concerned about his pace and a suspected issue with his car, also calling into the pits.
Piastri, meanwhile, made his second stop for a fresh set of hard tyres on lap 33, emerging fifth on the road.
The timing gave Norris a window of clear air ahead, and the reigning world champion proceeded to produce a sequence of stunning laps, significantly faster than his teammate despite the latter’s fresher rubber.
Oscar Piastri retires after losing Hungarian GP race lead
Norris ultimately made his second stop on lap 39 and rejoined the race ahead of Piastri, who encountered backmarker Carlos Sainz in the first sector of the circuit before the Williams veered into the McLaren resulting to contact, damaging Piastri’s car and rhythm.
The stewards launched a formal investigation into the incident, which would later result in a five-second time penalty for Sainz.
Catastrophe then struck Piastri completely on lap 56 when he was forced to stop on track with a severe gearbox issue, effectively ending any realistic prospect of a McLaren one-two finish.
The Virtual Safety Car was deployed to recover the stricken McLaren, as Norris, Hamilton and Leclerc took advantage of the VSC window to make their third pit stops of the afternoon. Verstappen and Antonelli, by contrast, elected to stay out gaining track position over the two Ferraris as cars shuffled back onto the circuit.

When the dust settled, Norris led by a comfortable margin from Verstappen, with Hamilton, Antonelli, and Leclerc filing in behind.
A further twist came in the closing laps when replays appeared to show that Antonelli had reached the VSC white line at the end of the start/finish straight just before Hamilton, meaning Hamilton had gained an unfair advantage by pitting when he did relative to the VSC boundary.
Hamilton was forced to hand back position to Antonelli, dropping back to fourth on the road, before he was slapped with a five-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane, dropping him behind Leclerc in the final classification.
Amid the drama, Norris crossed the line to take his first victory of 2026 and deliver McLaren’s first Grand Prix win of the year.
