Oscar Piastri overpowered George Russell and his McLaren teammate Lando Norris from lights-to-flag to claim F1 Qatar GP Sprint victory, keeping his Formula 1 title hopes alive.
The Australian started from pole position and led every lap of the 19-lap sprint, finishing 4.9 seconds ahead of Russell, who drove a determined race for Mercedes but could not match Piastri’s pace.
Norris completed the podium in third, while Max Verstappen made up two places on the opening lap to finish fourth, closing the gap in the championship standings with just two races remaining in the season.
From the moment the lights went out, Oscar Piastri executed a flawless start and immediately established a gap over Russell and Norris.
The opening lap was marked by intense action behind the leading trio, as Verstappen moved up from sixth to fourth after an aggressive start, overtaking both Fernando Alonso and Kimi Antonelli.
The top five positions remained unchanged after the first lap, with Piastri in control and Russell and Norris fending off challenges from Verstappen and Red Bull teammate Yuki Tsunoda.
On Lap 2, Verstappen attempted to overtake Norris going into Turn 1 but the McLaren once again held off the Dutchman’s attempt, with Tsunoda trailing the quartet by a second.
Fernando Alonso, Kimi Antonelli and Carlos Sainz made up the top eight while Charles Leclerc dropped from ninth to 13th after going off at Turn 2.
By Lap 4, Norris had created enough of a buffer to quell any attempt from Verstappen while Piastri maintained a 1.2s lead over Russell.
The difficulty of overtaking at Lusail, due to the circuit’s high-speed corners and limited DRS zones mainly on the start-finish straight, meant the top five remained static for most of the race.
Verstappen was seemingly struggling to mount a challenge against Norris as his Red Bull continued to bounce as it had in qualifying, and by Lap 7 he had slipped back to over a second behind the McLaren.

Verstappen voiced his frustration over team radio claiming “I’m constantly jumping, not just bouncing,” as his RB21 continued to hold back his charge which saw Norris extend the gap to almost two whole seconds by Lap 9.
Meanwhile, Sainz suffered a bizarre moment on Lap 8 when he lost a part of his Williams bodywork while running in eighth, but it didn’t seem to affect his pace as he pulled two seconds clear of Isack Hadjar in the Racing Bulls.
Piastri was 1.8s ahead of Russell as the race approached halfway distance with Norris and Verstappen trailing behind but Tsunoda was shown the black-and-white for exceeding track limits resulting to a five-second penalty.
Behind him, Kimi Antonelli overtook Alonso for sixth after an off-track excursion from the Aston Martin driver with his teammate Lance Stroll suffering a slow pitstop further back in 17th place.
Leclerc’s attempts to make up positions were undone in his battle with Liam Lawson as they both went off the track on Lap 11, the Racing Bulls driver told to give the position back to Leclerc.
Piastri had stretched his gap to 2.2s from Russell with five laps to go as Norris cruised comfortably in third, over three and a half seconds ahead of Verstappen in fourth.
Antonelli was next to be handed a five-second time penalty for exceeding track limits, as Norris received a warning for the same with several drivers battling oversteer.

Further down the field, Max Verstappen took fourth ahead of his teammate Yuki Tsunoda who produced the best result of his Red Bull tenure in fifth, while Kimi Antonelli finished sixth for Mercedes.
Fernando Alonso was seventh for Aston Martin, and Carlos Sainz claimed the final point in eighth for Williams.
