2026 F1 Canadian Grand Prix FP1 Results: Kimi Antonelli tops red-flagged practice

Kimi Antonelli marked out his early 2026 Formula 1 credentials by dominating the only practice for the Canadian Grand Prix in a blistering display that underlined Mercedes upgrades.

The 19-year-old posted a lap time of 1:13.402 to top the session by 0.142 seconds over teammate George Russell who suffered a late spin and lightly struck the barrier but escaped damage.

Three red flags forced the FIA to extend FP1 running twice, with the first coming just 11 minutes in when Liam Lawson parked his Racing Bulls out of Turn 4 due to a loss of power steering.

The second red flag came 12 minutes later when Alex Albon crashed into the wall coming out of Turn 6/7 after hitting a groundhog. Thankfully, Albon was able to extricate himself from the cockpit under his own power and was escorted off the track without any visible signs of injury.

The session was paused for more than 15 minutes to recover Williams wreckage as the FIA announced another 15-minute extension.

The final red flag was triggered moments later when Esteban Ocon crashed into the wall after losing control of his A524 on the exit of Turn 4, a notoriously tricky corner where the kerbs can unsettle the rear if the car is not perfectly aligned.

Ocon’s front wing made contact with the inside barrier, causing the car to bounce back across the track and then come to rest against the outside wall, but escaped serious damage.

Franco Colapinto, meanwhile, was unable to set a time after suffering a sudden loss of power which sidelined his Alpine into the pits.

Ferrari duo of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc took third and fourth, respectively, while Max Verstappen put together the fifth fastest lap despite reporting heavy steering and snaps when downshifting.

McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri followed in sixth and seventh as Arvid Lindblad slotted into eighth for Racing Bulls, beating Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso who delivered a surprise top 10 finish.
