Ty Gibbs held off Ryan Blaney in a heart-pounding overtime showdown to seal his first NASCAR Cup win in Sunday’s Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway.
The 23-year-old driver and grandson to Hall of Fame team owner Joe Gibbs rallied his No. 54 JGR Toyota to the lead after a ninth caution and beat Blaney to the finish by just 0.055 seconds, marking the closest ever margin of victory at Bristol.
“It’s awesome what you can do with great people. To be in this position is great,” said Gibbs who was excited to notch the milestone after 131 Cup starts. “I would have loved for my father to see this, but he knew it was going to happen and expected it as well.
“It was a great day for us. My No. 54 boys didn’t give up. Pit crew is just amazing. This is our family, and it’s been great. Very honored to be in this situation.
“Thank you for Monster Energy. Been with me my whole career. Mitch Covington, Dave Gowland, Elton, everybody a part of it. They’ve been with me since I was a kid. I really appreciate this.”
The 0.533-mile concrete oval delivered another chapter of high-banking drama under the night sky as 36 drivers battled tire wear, cautions and strategy in a race that went well beyond its scheduled 500 laps.
Ryan Blaney led the opening laps effortlessly, pulling away to a 1.4-second advantage by lap 14 over Ross Chastain, while Kyle Larson methodically climbed into third, setting the tone for his race-high 284 laps led.
A spin by Brad Keselowski on lap 62 brought out the first caution, bunching the pack and prompting a wave of green-flag stops where leaders pitted but Chase Elliott and Josh Berry stayed out to lead briefly.
Larson was the first off pit road, reclaiming the point on the lap 70 restart ahead of Berry and Christopher Bell, with Blaney slotting into third.
Reddick was slapped with a speeding penalty on pit road, dropping him into the mid field as Larson dominated the final laps to win Stage 1 over Blaney, Bell, Briscoe and Berry.

Stage 2 unfolded with Larson and Berry restarting up front on lap 126, before Bell tagged the wall on lap 144 and spun to suspension damage that dropped him three laps down after repairs.
Another caution unfolded on lap 160 after Shane van Gisbergen, John Hunter Nemechek, and Alex Bowman crashed at Turn 3, thinning the lead lap contenders to around 34 cars.
Larson held firm through restarts to cap Stage 2 with another victory beating Blaney, Hamlin, Hocevar, and Briscoe.
Entering the final stage, Blaney powered his No. 51 Penske Ford to the lead on lap 251 but cautions punctuated the action: Connor Zilisch spun on lap 382, dropping him 31st and three laps back, followed by a Kyle Busch incident on lap 312 at Turn 4 where he was bumped by Riley Herbst, tagging Erik Jones, McDowell and Bell in the melee.
Larson reclaimed the lead briefly post-restart on lap 320 alongside Hamlin, but Blaney overtook him on lap 338, holding a shrinking 0.85-second edge over Gibbs by lap 465.
Chase Elliott spun on lap 477 and triggered another yellow leading to a critical pit cycle where Blaney and Larson opted for fresh tires, sacrificing track position.
Gibbs stayed out along with Briscoe, Hocevar, Hamlin and Reddick after a bold call from Joe Gibbs Racing crew chief Chris Gayle that ultimately positioned the young driver perfectly in the lead by for the endgame.
Gibbs and Briscoe led from the front row as the field went back to green on lap 480 and fended off challengers until lap 498 when Herbst spun after contact from Busch, sending the race into overtime.
The double-file restart saw Gibbs defend the high line masterfully against Blaney’s fresh-shod No. 12 charging from below all the way to the checked flag in a photo finish.
