Shane van Gisbergen’s victory at Watkins Glen sets new NASCAR Cup Series record

Shane van Gisbergen‘s victory margin at the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series Go Bowling at The Glen went down in history books as the largest ever at Watkins Glen, after taking the checkered flag 11.8-seconds over Christopher Bell to mark his fourth straight road course win of the season.

Held on August 10, 2025, the third last race of the regular season unfolded over 90 laps on the iconic 2.45-mile road course nestled in Watkins Glen, New York.

Van Gisbergen’s victory not only cemented his reputation as the season’s premier road course specialist but also set a new Cup Series record for the number of victories on road or street courses by a rookie.

Unlike his previous three wins in Mexico City, Chicago, and Sonoma, van Gisbergen did not start from pole position, having been edged out by Ryan Blaney in qualifying.

However, the Auckland, New Zealand native took an early lead on lap 25 of the 90-lap race and then executed a flawless race strategy and driving performance on the 2.45-mile road course, setting a Cup Series rookie record.

The race itself was relatively clean and predominantly under green with only three cautions which lasted eight laps, allowing drivers to maintain high speeds and focus on strategy rather than incident recovery.

Six different drivers featured in a total of eight lead changes, with last year’s winner Chris Buescher claiming Stage 1 victory while Blaney led Stage 2, setting the stage for a strategic battle during the final segment.

Meanwhile, Van Gisbergen maintained a flawless racing rhythm coupled with precise pit strategy execution. His team’s timing proved pivotal when the rookie made his final pit stop with 27 laps remaining, cycling into the lead on lap 74.

From there, the Auckland, New Zealand native controlled the pace, cruising unchallenged to win the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series Go Bowling at The Glen with an impressive 11.116-second margin over runner-up Christopher Bell.

Shane van Gisbergen’s victory margin was the second largest ever recorded at Watkins Glen in the Cup Series.

The race weekend carried deep emotional significance for van Gisbergen as his father Robert was in attendance for the first time all year, allowing the driver to share this milestone personally with his family.

“Good to get that one back,” said van Gisbergen who recently signed multi-year contract extension with Trackhouse Racing. “Thank everyone for coming out. What an awesome race. The last stint was a bit cleared out, but the battle coming back through I had a lot of fun.

“Thank you to WeatherTech, Trackhouse. Car was just amazing again. To get another win, and I definitely gave that Bus Stop wall another meter on that last lap, but yeah, awesome.”

Van Gisbergen’s season has been remarkable with five wins in just 38 career NASCAR Cup Series starts, positioning him only behind Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson among active drivers in road or street course victories.

His consistent dominance on road courses, however, contrasts with his performance on oval tracks where he currently sits 25th in season standings largely due to having only one top-15 oval finish.

Despite this, his accumulation of playoff points through victories keeps him in strong contention as the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs approach. He will need to up his game on the upcoming challenging oval tracks such as Darlington, World Wide Technologies Raceway, and Bristol.

Meanwhile, Chris Buescher secured third place followed by William Byron in fourth and Chase Briscoe rounding out the top five.

Ryan Blaney despite losing the lead late in the race maintained a respectable sixth-place finish. Other notable performers included Daniel Suárez, Bubba Wallace, Tyler Reddick, and Ross Chastain who completed the top ten finishers.
