Home favorite Franco Morbidelli emerged as the fastest rider in opening practice for the 2025 San Marino MotoGP at Misano despite a penalty and a late crash.
The VR46 rider set the pace with a top lap time of 1:31.342 which was particularly commendable given the challenges he faced, including a 10-minute suspension at the start of the session due to a penalty from a previous incident at the Catalunya race.
Showing resilience Morbidelli gradually improved his lap times during FP1, eventually climbing to the top of the timesheets before unfortunately crashing toward the session’s end.
However, his time was sufficient to keep him ahead of a competitive field that included 23 riders.
The 2025 San Marino MotoGP FP1 unfolded in mixed circumstances with several riders pushing hard to test their setups and fitness on the Misano circuit, which is known for its technical layout with fast corners and short straights.
Meanwhile, Fabio Quartararo claimed the second fastest time trailing Morbidelli by just 0.249s, while Fabio Di Giannantonio went third fastest, marking an impressive showing for the VR46 Racing team at their home event.
The Marquez brothers rounded out the top five, with last weekend’s winner at Catalunya Alex Marquez leading Marc who endured a challenging ride. His Ducati felt somewhat stiff but managed to hold a spot among the leading times.
Luca Marini, Pedro Acosta and home hero Aprilia Marco Bezzecchi emerged as the fastest Honda, KTM and Aprilia in sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively, while Trackhouse rider Raul Fernandez and reigning world champion Jorge Martin completed the top ten.
Francesco Bagnaia continued to struggle in 11th with Joan Mir finishing 12th on the second Honda. Pramac Yamaha duo Jack Miller and Miguel Oliveira followed in 13th and 14th ahead of last year’s race winner Enea Bastianini.
Rookie Fermin Aldeguer went 16th fastest while Maverick Vinales, Alex Rins, Ai Ogura and Brad Binder took 17th to 20th.
Test rider Augusto Fernandez debuted Yamaha’s V4 MotoGP prototype this weekend as a wild-card but finished in 21st after a mid-session technical issue, while Johann Zarco rounded out the grid.
