KTM’s Pedro Acosta stormed to his first MotoGP win at the 2026 season-opening Thai Grand Prix Sprint race following a dramatic Marc Marquez penalty as polesitter Marco Bezzecchi crashed early.
Acosta capitalized on the chaos to outduel reigning world champion Marc Marquez, who was relegated to second after a controversial stewards’ penalty for forcing the factory KTM rider wide in a late-race battle.
The thrilling opener to the 2026 MotoGP season set the tone for what promises to be another fiercely competitive year, with Acosta becoming the youngest Sprint Race winner in history at 21 years and 279 days.
The race, contested over 13 laps under the intense heat and humidity typical of the Thai circuit, began with high expectations pinned on Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi who had dominated the weekend’s practice sessions and secured pole position with a blistering lap time.
Bezzecchi rocketed off the line, maintaining his lead into Turn 1 and pulling a small gap early on as the pack jostled behind him.
Pedro Acosta, starting from a strong grid position after a solid qualifying, slotted into second, closely followed by Ducati’s Marc Marquez, who wasted no time in applying pressure.
Bezzecchi’s Aprilia looked planted and fast through the technical sectors but disaster struck on lap 2 when the Italian lost the front end at Turn 3, sliding out dramatically while leading comfortably.
The unexpected Marco Bezzecchi crash not only ended his perfect weekend but opened the door for an intense duel between Acosta and Marquez who quickly pulled away from the chasing pack, trading positions multiple times in a display of MotoGP at its rawest.
Acosta, known for his fearless late-braking maneuvers honed in Moto2 and Moto3, repeatedly dive-bombed Marquez into the final corner on two occasions before the Ducati rider retaliated with precise lines and superior top speed on the straights.
Marquez appeared in control midway through the race, his experience shining as he defended aggressively without crossing into recklessness.
However, on the penultimate lap Acosta seized a slight mistake from Marquez in the twisty middle section, snatching the lead with a textbook pass that showcased his precision under pressure.
Marquez responded immediately at the end of that lap with a hard block pass, squeezing Acosta wide which prompted a swift investigation from Race Direction who forced the nine-time World Champion to drop a position, communicated via dashboard message.
Marquez complied at the final corner allowing Acosta to cross the line 0.108 seconds ahead, securing his first MotoGP win atop the rostrum.
Behind the leading duo, Raul Fernandez delivered a strong performance to claim third for Trackhouse Aprilia, followed by his teammate Ai Ogura and stablemate Jorge Martin, who rounded out the top five with a consistent ride that salvaged some points for the manufacturer after Bezzecchi’s misfortune.
Martin’s fifth came under scrutiny post-race due to potential tire pressure infringements, though no penalty was issued.
Acosta’s Red Bull KTM Factory teammate Brad Binder rounded out the top six with a gritty performance after methodically picking off rivals from a mid-grid start.
Joan Mir was the best of the Hondas in seventh, while VR46 Ducati’s Fabio Di Giannantonio clawed back to eighth after a first-corner tangle with Alex Marquez cost him positions early.
Marquez’s Ducati teammate Francesco Bagnaia salvaged a single point in ninth from a challenging 13th on the grid, his late-race charge demonstrating resilience amid a weekend hampered by setup issues.
Luca Marini rounded out the top ten on the Honda as Alex Marquez recovered to 11th.
