Pato O’Ward seized a hard-fought victory over Josef Newgarden in the IndyCar Synk 275 at Iowa Speedway, marking an unforgettable 100th career IndyCar start for the Arrow McLaren driver.
The event unfolded on the “Fastest Short Track on the Planet” and featured a blend of tactical pit stops, daring overtakes, and resilient performances from across the 27-car field, culminating in a finish that was the closest at Iowa since 2007.
From the drop of the green flag, pole sitter Josef Newgarden immediately established his dominance in a bid to defend his unmatched record at Iowa Speedway, leading the field through the early laps with his characteristic precision and pace.
Behind him, the field began to sort itself out, with drivers jostling for position and seeking opportunities to advance in the tightly packed order.
However, the early stages of the race were marked by a significant incident involving Colton Herta who spun before even reaching the start-finish line to take the green flag.
This mishap triggered the first caution of the day, forcing the field to regroup and setting the tone for a race that would be punctuated by interruptions and restarts.
Once the action resumed, Newgarden continued to lead while Conor Daly emerged as an early challenger, briefly holding second place before the race settled into a rhythm.
As the laps ticked by, the competitive order began to shift. Scott McLaughlin who had crashed in qualifying and started from the back of the grid embarked on a remarkable charge from 27th to 14th by the time the second caution was triggered on Lap 75, following a crash involving Jacob Abel.
The race’s middle segment was defined by a series of green flag runs, during which Newgarden extended his lead and appeared poised to claim a record-extending seventh win at Iowa. However, the complexion of the race changed dramatically as pit strategies began to unfold.
Pato O’Ward, starting from fifth, methodically worked his way forward, executing clean overtakes and maintaining consistent lap times. The Arrow McLaren driver’s approach was measured yet aggressive, positioning himself within striking distance of Newgarden as the race approached its decisive phase.
A pivotal moment came during the final round of pit stops as Newgarden who had led an astonishing 232 of the first 233 laps, encountered a slight delay exiting his pit box.
The minor bobble opened the door for O’Ward who pitted a lap later and executed a flawless stop. The overcut allowed the Mexican driver to cycle out ahead of Newgarden, seizing the lead at a critical juncture.

The stoppage bunched up the field and set the stage for a dramatic sprint to the finish. When racing resumed, O’Ward faced the challenge of keeping Newgarden at bay through a pair of restarts with 14 and nine laps to go.
O’Ward’s defense was impeccable, as he anticipated Newgarden’s every move and responded with precise car placement and unwavering focus. His Arrow McLaren Chevrolet proved up to the task, allowing the race leader to maintain his advantage up to the chequered flag.
Newgarden for his part was unrelenting, probing for weaknesses and attempting to force an error but ultimately found no way past the resolute leader, finishing the race in second, just 0.2352s adrift.
Meanwhile, Will Power delivered a strong performance to secure third place, making it a Chevrolet sweep of the top three positions.
Scott McLaughlin stood out with a remarkable drive from last to fourth while Alex Palou marked the highest-finishing Honda driver in fifth.
