BMW M Team WRT has unveiled a strikingly new BMW M Hybrid V8 prototype poised to challenge for victories in both the 2026 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and FIA World Endurance Championship.
This comprehensive evolution, featuring nearly 50 percent new bodywork, refined aerodynamics, advanced lighting and a new livery, represents the outfit’s boldest upgrade since the car’s debut, drawing from two seasons of race data to deliver superior consistency and drivability across diverse track conditions.
The announcement, timed ahead of this weekend’s Roar Before the Rolex 24, signals BMW’s intensified commitment to the pinnacle of endurance racing, where the German marque aims to elevate its podium finishes into outright triumphs against rivals like Porsche, Ferrari, and Toyota.
Both BMW M Team WRT cars will sport the “Inception Design,” a livery which was worn by the team’s #15 car in the World Endurance Championship Hypercar category in 2025.
“For the 2026 season, the car debuts a new livery based on the Inception Design, now applied across all BMW M Motorsport LMDh cars — uniting the entire BMW M race car family under one consistent look and feel,” BMW posted on X.
The new BMW M Hybrid V8 prototype bursts into view with a redesigned front end that commands immediate attention.
A narrower, illuminated kidney grille—BMW’s iconic signature—retains its distinctive BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting, ensuring the prototype remains an unmistakable beacon during night stints that define endurance events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans or the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Complementing this is an adjusted front splitter that optimizes airflow management, channeling air more efficiently to critical components while generating enhanced downforce stability.
The headlights have undergone a complete overhaul, incorporating two rectangular LED modules per side flanked by tilted yellow light bars, which not only boost nighttime visibility but also aid in multi-class traffic identification—a vital edge in the chaotic packs of IMSA’s GTP class.
These visual and functional upgrades stem directly from engineer insights gathered over prior campaigns, where inconsistent performance on certain circuits highlighted aero vulnerabilities.
BMW M Team WRT assumes full operations for both championships from its new Belgian headquarters and U.S. base, succeeding Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing starting 2026 after a storied partnership.
This shift, previewed at Daytona’s test—WRT’s inaugural U.S. management outing—brings continuity with the squad’s established WEC success, where it fields the M Hybrid V8.
Driver lineups exude stability, retaining all eight factory pilots: for 2026 WEC, the #15 BMW Hypercar features Kevin Magnussen, Raffaele Marciello and Dries Vanthoor, while the #20 will be run by Robin Frijns, René Rast and Sheldon van der Linde.
For IMSA 2026, the #24 BMW GTP will be driven by Van der Linde, Vanthoor (Sprint), Frijns (Endurance) and Rast (Daytona), while the #25 car will be under Philipp Eng, Marco Wittmann (Full Season), Magnussen (Endurance) and Marciello (Daytona).
