Formula E GEN4 car unveiled: Stunning 800hp contender redefines electric racing

The newly unveiled Formula E GEN4 car will be the most powerful in the series’ history packing over 800hp plus active all-wheel drive set to debut next year.

FIA and Formula E have unveiled the all-new GEN4 car, a groundbreaking evolution in electric racing technology set to debut in the 2026-27 season.

This marks a significant leap forward in power, performance, and sustainability compared to its predecessor, the GEN3 Evo.a power.

The latest model boasts an astounding peak power output of 600kW, equivalent to over 815 horsepower, representing a 50% increase from last season’s GEN3 Evo which capped at 400kW (536hp) during race mode.

This substantial power increase positions the GEN4 car among the most powerful machines in Formula E history and brings it closer to the performance levels of Formula 2 and approaching aspects of Formula 1 speeds.

A key innovation in the GEN4 car is the introduction of active all-wheel drive (AWD), available at all moments throughout the race, rather than only during specific phases like qualifying duels, race starts, and attack mode in previous models.

The active AWD system includes a new active differential that not only enhances traction and handling but also serves as a platform for automotive manufacturers to test and innovate technologies relevant to future road vehicles.

Improved drivetrain will significantly boost corner exit speeds and acceleration out of slow corners, potentially enabling the GEN4 car to surpass the quickness of Formula 1 cars in certain scenarios.

The new car also features two distinct aerodynamic setups: a high-downforce configuration optimized for qualifying, designed to maximize grip and cornering speed, and a low-downforce mode tailored for race conditions.

The low-downforce aerodynamic setup reduces drag, which is critical for improving straight-line speed and conserving energy over the race distance.

Battery technology has seen a remarkable upgrade with the Formula E GEN4 car equipped with a 55kWh battery pack, up from the previous 47kWh in the GEN3 era.

Increased power capacity allows for more sustained power output and enables drivers and teams to explore more aggressive or diverse racing strategies.

Additionally, regenerative braking capabilities have been enhanced to recover up to 700kW of power, an improvement over the 600kW in GEN3, making the GEN4 car one of the most energy-efficient cars in motorsport.

The chassis, still manufactured by Spark Racing Technology, maintains the lightweight, high-strength construction synonymous with Formula E but integrates new sustainable materials.

The Gen4 car proudly uses 100% recyclable materials for its construction, underscoring Formula E’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Battery supply responsibilities have shifted from Williams Advanced Engineering to Italian company Podium Advanced Technologies, bringing fresh expertise and advanced battery technology to the series.

Furthermore, Bridgestone has been appointed the official tire supplier, introducing tires engineered to handle the increased power and dynamic stresses of the GEN4 car while maintaining the integrity of race durability.

The car’s dimensions have also evolved, featuring a longer wheelbase and increased width compared to the GEN3 Evo.

With a wheelbase extended to 3080mm from 2705mm and a width expanded to 1800mm from 1707mm, these changes contribute to improved stability and handling.

The car’s overall length has increased by 520mm giving it a more aggressive and performance-oriented stance reminiscent of a traditional single-seater race car with aesthetic cues akin to Super Formula or Formula 2 cars.
