F1 Monaco GP 2026 Highlights: Kimi Antonelli takes dominant win amid red flags, penalties mayhem

Kimi Antonelli claimed a stunning victory at the 2026 Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix after holding off Lewis Hamilton, becoming the youngest winner in the history of the iconic Monte Carlo street circuit.

The 19‑year‑old Italian survived multiple red flags, crumbling track surface and the renewed challenge from Hamilton to seal his fifth consecutive win of the season.

From the moment the lights went out, Antonelli proved his qualifying pace was no fluke, getting a clean start and immediately pulling away from Max Verstappen to establish an early lead that would grow to nearly 30 seconds at its maximum over Hamilton, who had started third on the grid for Ferrari.

However, Verstappen suffered a devastating start to the race as his Red Bull slowed off the line with a suspected engine issue which saw the Dutchman drop to the bottom of the grid before withdrawing on the second lap.

With Verstappen out of the race, Hamilton and Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc jumped ahead of the stricken Red Bull to take second and third place respectively, but neither could match Antonelli’s relentless pace in the opening stages.

By lap five, the young Mercedes driver had already built a four-second cushion over Hamilton, demonstrating pace that was simply unmatched on the tight and unforgiving Monaco streets.

The first two-thirds of the race appeared to be heading towards a straightforward Antonelli victory, with the young Mercedes driver managing his tyres and pace flawlessly while building an seemingly insurmountable lead.

However, the complexion of the entire Grand Prix changed dramatically on lap 60 when Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll crashed into the barriers at Antony Noghes, bringing out the Safety Car for the first time.

This development wiped out Antonelli’s massive 30-second lead in an instant, triggering a raft of pit stops as drivers who had been running long stints rushed to the pits for fresh tyres, fundamentally reshuffling the order behind the leader.

Several drivers hit with Monaco Grand Prix pit-lane speeding penalties

Among those who pitted was Lewis Hamilton, who unfortunately picked up one of the six Monaco Grand Prix pit-lane speeding penalties that plagued the race.

George Russell, meanwhile, spent most of the race stuck behind Isack Hadjar’s Red Bull before managing to jump the French driver during the scheduled pit stops.

However, Russell was slapped with a pit-lane speeding penalty but, crucially, Mercedes failed to execute the required five-second penalty when he pitted under the Safety Car.

According to the regulations, the team should have served the penalty during that stop, but because they did not, Russell was automatically given a more severe drive-through penalty that he was forced to serve two laps after the restart.

The mishandling by the Silver Arrows, combined with the chaos of the late-race restart, pushed Russell all the way down to 13th place, outside the points entirely.

Alpine’s Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly were the next drivers to receive pit-lane speeding penalties followed by Oscar Piastri as McLaren suffered a disappointing weekend after Lando Norris retired with a battery issue.

Further red flags as Charles Leclerc crashes

Following five laps under Safety Car conditions, the field prepared for a restart on lap 66 but the chaos was far from over as Charles Leclerc, running in third place and dreaming of a historic home victory, crashed at exactly the same corner where Stroll had previously struck the wall.

Leclerc’s Ferrari hit the barriers with significant force, bringing out a second Safety Car which set in motion the final sequence of dramatic events that would define F1 Monaco GP 2026 highlights.

Shortly after Charles Leclerc crash, Race Control issued a red flag after officials discovered that a recently resurfaced section on the entry to the final corner had degraded significantly, leaving asphalt debris scattered across the racing line and required immediate attention.

The race was stopped on lap 68 with just 10 laps to go, and the field was delayed for approximately 40 minutes while workers repaired the broken asphalt.

Racing finally resumed from a standing start with eight laps remaining, and Antonelli managed to hold off Hamilton’s charge all the way to take the chequered flag first.
