F1 Barcelona Grand Prix 2026 Qualifying Results: Russell beats Hamilton to pole, Leclerc crashes

George Russell narrowly pipped Lewis Hamilton to claim pole position for the 2026 Formula 1 Barcelona Grand Prix, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc crashed dramatically in Q3.

Russell ended his teammate Kimi Antonelli’s run of five successive qualifying P1s with a blistering lap of 1:14.679, that put him 0.064 seconds ahead of Hamilton as Antonelli took third.

The qualifying session began under warm but tricky conditions at the Catalan circuit, with drivers facing the challenge of finding grip on a track that had seen significant rubber laid down throughout the weekend while also managing brake temperatures that would prove critical for the day’s events.

Lewis Hamilton led the way in Q1 with a time of 1:15.625, actually slightly faster than George Russell’s 1:15.717 as Charles Leclerc and Kimi Antonelli followed in a dominant Ferrari-Mercedes showing.

Among those in the drop zone included Esteban Ocon who qualified 17th for the third consecutive race after being pushed into the elimination zone late on by Carlos Sainz, whose Williams team-mate Alex Albon took 18th, while Sergio Perez once again outqualified Cadillac teammate Valtteri Bottas.

Lance Stroll qualified ahead of Aston Martin teammate Fernando Alonso for the first time in 2026 by taking 21st, as the double world champion found himself qualifying dead last at his home race.

Q2 began with heightened tension as the top 15 drivers from Q1 competed to make it into the top 10, with Russell continuing his dominant form by topping the segment with a 1:15.228, just 0.053 seconds ahead of Leclerc. Antonelli, Lando Norris and Hamilton completed the top five.

The session ultimately saw 11th go to Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad, 0.161s ahead of 12th-placed Gabriel Bortoleto for Audi, with 13th going to Alpine’s Franco Colapinto, who has now outqualified team-mate Pierre Gasly in five of the last six rounds. Oliver Bearman took 15th for Haas with 16th going to Carlos Sainz.

Q3 began with the tension at its absolute peak, as the ten remaining drivers understood that every millisecond would matter in determining who would start Sunday’s 66-lap race from pole position.

Max Verstappen set the provisional benchmark with a 1:15.328s as Oscar Piastri responded with a 1:15.176s before the session was interrupted by a major incident.

Charles Leclerc lost control of his Ferrari coming through Turn 4 on his first flying lap. The Monaco-born racer experienced a snap of oversteer on the exit of the long right-hand corner which snapped to the right before he over-corrected to the left, sending his car crashing head-on into the barriers.

With just three minutes remaining, Russell found three-tenths of a second to snatch pole position for the 2026 Formula 1 Barcelona Grand Prix. Hamilton followed up with a late 1m14.743s to take second, while Lando Norris set a 1m15.001s at the end to claim third, pushing Antonelli down to fourth.
