Francesco Bagnaia served up a thrilling Malaysian MotoGP Sprint victory in a commanding display from lights-to-flag, beating Alex Marquez to the line.
The race held at the Sepang International Circuit was crucial not only for race bragging rights but also had significant championship implications with Alex sealing the 2025 MotoGP Championship runner-up spot behind his brother Marc Marquez.
The sprint race unfolded over 10 laps, delivering intense competition and dramatic moments that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
From the outset, Bagnaia capitalized on his pole position start to launch confidently into the lead. Choosing the soft compound rear tyre and a medium front tyre setup—a strategic choice among nine riders including Bagnaia—he quickly set about breaking away from the pack.
His pace was impeccable, allowing him to maintain a slender but consistent gap over second-place Alex Marquez who was locked in a fierce battle with Pedro Acosta after making a minor error at the end of the Lap 1.
Acosta who had taken third into Turn 1 after starting from the middle of the second row had initially showed promise but soon struggled to find clear track ahead hampering his momentum.
The opening laps also featured a concerted effort from Joan Mir to join the front runners. His aggressive riding style saw him making significant gains by the halfway stage, elevating him to contention for a possible Honda podium finish.
Unfortunately, Mir’s charge was cut short by a brutal crash on lap five which brought his exhilarating prospects to a premature end and shuffled the pack behind.
With Mir out and Acosta’s charge fading, the pressure on Marquez lessened, allowing the Spaniard to consolidate second place.

Meanwhile, his Gresini teammate Fermin Aldeguer made a notable mid-race charge that shook up the order and formed part of one of the sprint’s most exciting battles.
With sheer determination and youthful vigor, Aldeguer took over fourth place from VR46 rider Franco Morbidelli just as Mir crashed and within the closing laps snatched third place from the struggling Acosta.
By this stage, Francesco Bagnaia had dominated the race with a lead of over a second and a half which he ultimately extended to a blistering 2.259s at the checkered flag to claim Malaysian MotoGP Sprint victory.
Alex Marquez secured a solid second place to cement his position as the 2025 MotoGP Championship runner-up, while his teammate Fermin Aldeguer followed in third to secure the 2025 MotoGP Rookie of the Year title.
However, Aldeguer was slapped with an eight-second post-race penalty for low tyre pressure that dropped him to seventh officially, elevating Pedro Acosta back onto the podium for a remarkable KTM result.
Franco Morbidelli in the Pertamina VR46 Ducati delivered a solid performance to finish just behind Acosta in fourth, while Fabio Quartararo’s Monster Yamaha effort earned him a respectable fifth.
Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi fought back to claim sixth after starting from 14th on the grid—a huge setback for the rider who was gearing up to claim his third consecutive Sprint victory.
The closing stages were marked by some on-track incidents, notably . The confrontation resulted in Espargaro crashing out, further altering the runners-up behind the leaders.
Honda LCR’s Johann Zarco, VR46 Ducati’s Fabio Di Giannantonio and KTM Tech3’s Enea Bastianini completed the top ten, all showing tenacity and tactical acumen in traffic.
Pol Espargaro finished 11th after a late clash with Luca Marini who lost the front of his Honda and clipped the Tech3 KTM, causing the Spaniard to drop three positions.
Ai Ogura, Raul Fernandez, Jack Miller, Alex Rins, and Brad Binder all finished safely within the points scoring positions in 12th through 16th places respectively.
Somkiat Chantra, Lorenzo Savadori, Augusto Fernandez and Michele Pirro rounded out the field. Savadori and Pirro were the only riders to run a medium front tyre instead of the soft front, which likely affected their pace and ultimate positions.
