Marc Marquez snagged dramatic Catalunya MotoGP Sprint victory after his brother Alex Marquez crashed out of the lead, extending his impressive winning streak to 15 races.
Alex who had been leading the better part of the race made a costly error at Turn 10 with four laps remaining and crashed into the gravel trap, handing the top spot to Marc.
The 12-lap race unfolded at the iconic Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, under warm and dry conditions that promised fierce combat among the top contenders of the 2025 MotoGP season.
From the very start, pole sitter Alex Marquez made a clean getaway on his Gresini Ducati and quickly built a solid lead, stretching it to nearly one and a half seconds over his rivals, signaling a likely sprint win at his home Grand Prix.
Meanwhile, Fabio Quartararo on the Monster Energy Yamaha and Marc Marquez on the factory Ducati engaged in a tense battle for the key second position.
Quartararo who had initially dropped behind Marc on the start was aggressive in reclaiming ground and controversially rubbed against Marc at Turn 8 during their multiple position swaps.
This battle momentarily allowed KTM’s Pedro Acosta to snatch third place, showcasing a thrilling mix of skill and determination in the sprint’s opening laps.
However, the championship-leading Marquez quickly reasserted his dominance on the second lap and surgically passed both Acosta and Quartararo down the straight leading into Turn 1, reclaiming his spot behind his brother Alex.
At this juncture, the race narrative became a tale of two brothers separated by just half a second, with Alex dictating the tempo upfront and Marc poised to capitalize on any mistake.
Over the following laps, Alex maintained a nearly 1.5-second gap, riding confidently and seemingly on course for his second sprint victory of the season, having previously won at Silverstone.
However, with just four laps remaining the complexion of the race changed dramatically as Alex Marquez, perhaps feeling a bit too comfortable lost the front end of his Ducati at Turn 10, throwing him into the gravel and out of contention.
Alex later admitted that his mistake came from feeling “unbeatable” and too relaxed, a momentary lapse in concentration that ended what had looked like a sure victory.
His crash abruptly handed victory to Marc Marquez, who assumed the lead and managed the final laps with precision and composure to clinch the Catalunya MotoGP Sprint victory.
This marked his 7th consecutive sprint win so far in 2025, further solidifying his dominance and bringing him tantalizingly close to his seventh premier-class World Championship.
Meanwhile, Fabio Quartararo closely followed in second place, ending a brief podium drought and showing resilience after tough outings in previous races. His performance was commendable as he kept intense pressure on Marc without posing an immediate threat in the closing laps.
Fabio Di Giannantonio claimed an impressive third, marking his third sprint podium of the season and breaking clear from a tightly contested battle behind the leaders.
Pedro Acosta battled valiantly but ultimately finished fourth after his promising stint earlier in the race. Nevertheless, he led the KTM charge closely followed by Enea Bastianini and Brad Binder who completed a strong triple KTM showing just outside the podium places.
Honda riders also performed solidly with Johann Zarco and Luca Marini finishing seventh and eighth respectively, displaying consistency amid the highly competitive field.
The final point was taken by Ai Ogura on the Trackhouse Racing Aprilia, rounding out the top nine finishers.
Meanwhile, Francesco Bagnaia had a tough weekend, starting from 21st on the grid and finishing just 14th, a result well below expectations for the Ducati Lenovo Team.
The race also saw a string of dramatic crashes that underscored the Sprint Race’s cutthroat nature. Notably, reigning world champion Jorge Martin crashed out following a collision with Franco Morbidelli on Lap 7, ending his hopes early and adding to the day’s drama.
Other riders including Marco Bezzecchi, Fermin Aldeguer and Lorenzo Savadori did not finish, highlighting the challenging and unforgiving nature of the circuit and race conditions.
