NASCAR Brickyard 400 Highlights: Bubba Wallace takes historic win at Indianapolis in double-overtime

Bubba Wallace held off Kyle Larson in double-overtime drama to claim victory, becoming the first Black driver to win a major event at Indianapolis Motor Speedway – NASCAR Brickyard 400 Highlights.

Under the backdrop of midsummer Indiana, NASCAR descended upon the legendary 2.5-mile oval with a competitive field of thirty-nine drivers eager to kiss the famed bricks as rain, strategy, tense fuel calculations, and hard-nosed racing converged into a race filled with unpredictability and historic significance.

Bubba Wallace piloting the No. 23 Chumba Casino Toyota for 23XI Racing showed strong pace throughout Sunday’s race. He led a total of 30 laps including the most critical final 26 to finally secure his berth in the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs.

Wallace’s primary adversaries proved to be not only the competition on track—particularly Kyle Larson, the defending champion, who closed relentlessly in the final stint—but also inclement weather and the threat of running dry on fuel as overtime loomed.

The events that defined NASCAR Brickyard 400 highlights began to crystallize with 14 laps remaining.

At that point, Wallace had crafted a 5.057-second gap over Larson only for a sudden, brief shower to trigger a yellow flag that neutralized the field and sent the pack to pit lane with just four laps left on the original schedule.

The 20-minute weather delay forced all contenders to reevaluate their tactics, providing a rare mental reset and injecting even more suspense into an already fraught finish.

When the race resumed, Wallace nailed the first overtime restart pulling clear of Larson as chaos erupted behind the leaders—a five-car incident on the backstretch triggered another caution, setting up a second, even more anxiety-inducing restart.

Wallace radioed warnings over fuel mileage as the race was now set to run eight laps beyond its scheduled 160 but the No. 23 crew made a daring decision to stay out risking everything for the shot at immortality.

The gamble paid off: Wallace again aced the restart and held off Larson’s advances ultimately crossing the legendary yard of bricks with a margin of victory of 0.222 seconds over the fiercely competitive No. 5 Hendrick Chevy.

As the third win of his NASCAR Cup Series career and his first in a crown jewel event, it validated the work of his 23XI Racing team, affirmed his status as one of the top talents in the sport and punched his ticket to the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs.

NASCAR drivers net worth and salaries 2025: How much do Cup Series stars make?

“Oh, my gosh, I’m just so proud of this team,” Bubba Wallace said after snapping a 100-race winless streak dating back to Kansas in September 2022. “That adrenaline rush is crazy, ‘cause I’m coming off that right now, and I’m worn out.”

“It’s unbelievable. To win here at the Brickyard, knowing how big this race is, knowing all the noise that’s going on in the background, to set that all aside is a testament to these people here on this 23 team. It’s been getting old right around the cut line (for the Playoffs).”

Meanwhile, Denny Hamlin triumphed as the co-owner of Wallace’s 23XI Racing entry and third place finisher at Indianapolis. Hamlin, fresh off his win at Dover delivered a remarkable drive from the back of the grid after a qualifying crash forced him to use a backup car.

Ryan Preece and former Brickyard 400 winner Brad Keselowski rounded out the top five. Further back, Todd Gilliland secured a career-best sixth, followed by Ryan Blaney, Christopher Bell, Alex Bowman and Carson Hocevar in the top 10.

Behind the stars in the top ten, Justin Haley and John Hunter Nemechek finished 11th and 12th respectively, while Chase Elliott—who came into Indianapolis Motor Speedway leading the regular-season championship standings—brought his No. 9 Chevrolet home in 13th place.

Chris Buescher continued his streak of strong finishes in 14th and preserved a healthy gap above the playoff cutline. Austin Cindric, William Byron, and 17th-place Katherine Legge—a standout among part-timers—rounded out a highly competitive top half of the field.
