Watch the horror Alex Marquez crash during the Dutch TT Assen MotoGP which left him with a hand fracture requiring immediate surgery, putting his championship bid in serious doubt.
The Spanish rider, who had been enjoying the best season of his MotoGP career and was a genuine contender for the world championship, suffered a devastating accident that has cast a shadow over his campaign and sent ripples through the paddock and fanbase alike.
Alex Marquez entered the Dutch Grand Prix at Assen riding a wave of momentum. Piloting the Gresini Ducati GP24, he had consistently challenged the established order often outpacing factory riders and even besting Pecco Bagnaia in recent rounds.
His performance in the Saturday sprint at Assen was nothing short of spectacular, finishing second and closing the gap to his brother and 2025 MotoGP championship leader Marc Marquez to just 43 points.
The stage was set for a pivotal Sunday with Alex firmly in the hunt for victory and the championship lead within reach. The main race, however, would prove to be a turning point—one defined by both high drama and heartbreak.
In the early laps, Alex was embroiled in a fierce battle for position with KTM’s rising star Pedro Acosta. Both riders were pushing the limits, accelerating out of the notoriously tricky Turn 5 before disaster struck.
As Alex attempted to overtake Acosta, the two made contact on the exit of the corner and what initially appeared to be a minor rub between competitors quickly escalated into catastrophe.
Analysis of the incident revealed that Acosta’s rear end weaved into Alex’s path, causing the front brake lever of Marquez’s Ducati to be pressed inadvertently.
This subtle yet critical contact instantly locked the front wheel of Alex’s machine—a situation described by former champion Neil Hodgson as a “subtle thing” with devastating consequences, as there was no weight on the front of the bike at that moment.
The result was a violent high-side crash that sent Alex tumbling across the gravel and into the back straight, his race and immediate championship hopes in tatters.

Medical teams responded swiftly and Alex was transported to the circuit’s medical center where examinations confirmed the worst: a fracture of the second metacarpal in his left hand.
The injury required urgent surgical intervention and Alex was quickly flown to Madrid for surgery scheduled for the same evening.
The severity of the fracture combined with the short turnaround before the next round at the Sachsenring in Germany, immediately cast doubt on his participation in the upcoming race and dealt a severe blow to his championship hopes.
Alex Marquez crash was scrutinized by race stewards but after reviewing the footage and telemetry, the collision was deemed a racing incident—an unfortunate consequence of two highly competitive riders pushing to the absolute limit.

No penalties were issued and both teams accepted the judgment, though the fallout was significant. The crash not only sidelined one of the season’s standout performers but also dramatically altered the championship landscape.
For Alex Marquez, the timing of the injury could not have been worse. He had established himself as Marc Marquez’s closest challenger, sitting second in the 2025 MotoGP championship standings on a year-old Ducati.
His performances had silenced critics and raised expectations with many viewing him as a legitimate threat to the established order.
The crash at Dutch TT Assen MotoGP, however, leaves him 68 points adrift of his brother with his immediate racing future uncertain.
