The transformation comes as the Russian driver embarks on an ambitious plan to compete in multiple sports – including a highly anticipated boxing match later this year – showcasing his versatility and determination to redefine his public image.

The unexpected Nikita Mazepin rebrand marks a dramatic shift following his brief and controversial tenure in Formula 1 which ended under tumultuous circumstances.

Mazepin’s career change to a hybrid athlete was first revealed through his social media accounts, where he updated his bio to reflect his new pursuits. Speaking to Russian news agency Tass, he confirmed his plans to diversify his athletic career.

“This year, I plan to participate in five competitions in different sports,” the 25-year old revealed. “The boxing match will take place in the fall of 2025 and I hope everything will go well.”

The announcement comes three years after Mazepin’s departure from F1, which was precipitated by geopolitical tensions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. His Haas contract was terminated just before the start of 2022 season due to his father Dmitry Mazepin’s ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Dmitry Mazepin, a billionaire oligarch and owner of Uralkali—Haas’s former title sponsor—was sanctioned by the European Union alongside Nikita. Although these sanctions were later overturned, the fallout effectively ended Nikita Mazepin’s prospects of returning to Formula 1.

In the years since his F1 exit, Mazepin has remained active in motorsport through endurance racing. He founded his own team, 99 Racing, and competed in the Asian Le Mans Series in the LMP2 category.

Notably, he achieved a podium finish at the Four Hours of Dubai alongside teammates Neel Jani and Gonçalo Gomes during the team’s debut race. However, restrictions on international travel due to lingering sanctions have limited his ability to participate in many global motorsport events.

Mazepin’s decision to transition into multi-sport competition represents a bold attempt at reinvention. The term “hybrid athlete” has gained traction as a descriptor for individuals who compete across multiple sports or disciplines, requiring both physical versatility and mental adaptability.
