Zane Maloney signs with Andretti as Formula E reserve driver

Zane Maloney has signed with Andretti Global as Formula E reserve driver for the upcoming 2023-24 season.

Formula 2 champion and Red Bull Academy driver Zane Maloney will serve as Andretti Formula E’s reserve and development driver for season 10, the team announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Maloney has been offered a drive by Andretti three times this year after participating in the team’s rookie tests in Berlin and Rome. He additionally completed a session during the team’s preseason testing in Valencia.

As part of his new role with the American team, he will be putting in work in the simulator and journey to different races during Formula E’s 10th season. The Red Bull Junior driver is still qualified to take part in the upcoming Berlin rookie test, so Andretti still has a chance of picking him as a full-time driver.

Maloney will collaborate with the current World Champion Jake Dennis and Andretti’s latest signing Norman Nato to make sure the team makes the most out of their package at every E-Prix, beginning in Mexico City in January of next year.

He is overjoyed to have received the role and is thankful for Andretti’s faith in him as he is now resolved to assist both drivers.

“Joining Andretti Formula E as the official reserve and development driver is an incredible opportunity,” said Zane Maloney. “I’m grateful for the trust the team has placed in my abilities, and I’m determined to support Jake and Norman as best I can.

“The Andretti name has such a rich history in motorsport, so it’s a pretty surreal moment for me in my career.

“I’m looking forward to contributing to the team’s continued success in Season 10.”

Maloney is an exceptional talent and was even linked to a full-time seat at Andretti before NATO decided to leave the Nissan Formula E Team.

The 20-year-old has finished on the podium four times in his rookie season and currently sits 10th in the F2 standings. His previous achievements include winning the British Formula 4 Championship in 2019, finishing second in the FIA Formula 3 Championship last year, and winning the Formula Regional European Championship in 2021.

“We’ve had the pleasure of working closely with Zane, and his dedication, talent and enthusiasm really stood out to us,” Andretti’s FE team principal Roger Griffiths said.

“Not only has he proven himself in other racing series, but also on multiple occasions during the rookie sessions where he demonstrated an excellent understanding of our Gen3 car.

“We are delighted to have Zane Maloney join us as our official reserve and development driver and look forward to working closely with him throughout the coming season.”
