William Byron clinched the 2025 NASCAR Cup Regular Season title following his 12th place finish in Saturday’s Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway and holds a hefty advantage heading to the playoffs.
The regular season title rewards drivers who perform at the highest level over the first 26 races, accumulating points that reflect superiority across a wide spectrum of track types and racing conditions.
Byron’s season has been marked by a combination of multiple wins, numerous top-five finishes, and solid placements across diverse tracks, demonstrating his adaptability and technical racing prowess.
This consistent excellence was apparent in the Cook Out 400 where Byron’s calculated aggression and tactical decision-making helped him to avoid the pitfalls including a multi-car crash on Lap 198 which collected his title rival Chase Elliott.
“It feels damn good,” Byron said after the race. “Best 12th place finish we’ve ever had. We did a good job, just got some damage there with the big crash and it hurt us a little bit.
“Honestly, there were runs where we were pretty good. We drove up to sixth and on that second-to-last run, we were third. I thought we were in a good spot, but the tire was just not good for us, and fell off really hard.
“But anyway, proud of this team. Really proud of the effort all year. We’ve done a really good job through a lot of adversity. It feels really good to check this one off the list.
“We kind of had that in the back of our minds this year, just to be consistent. And even through some adversity, we were consistently fast and just up at the front … feels really good.”

After winning the Daytona 500, William Byron had struggled to deliver in the subsequent races which saw him lose the points lead up until August when he reclaimed the top spot with a remarkable victory at Iowa Speedway.
“I think just finally some things went our way,” he added. “I think honestly we’ve been doing a really good job on strategy, execution. We’ve brought good speed in August. I’d say our speed was the best in mid to late June.
“I would say in May we were super fast. Then June, we were really fast. I crashed probably our best car at Pocono. Then July we just had some really bad finishes, really bad things happened to us. Ran out of fuel a couple times.
“I think we buckled down and really got back to the team we’re capable of being. Pretty impressive August probably. Probably our best August we’ve ever had just executing, thinking outside the box, bringing fast cars.”
Strategically, securing the 2025 NASCAR Cup regular season title affords Byron not only the accolade itself but also valuable advantages including 15 additional playoff points that will provide a cushion in the high-stakes chase for the final season title.
Chase Elliott’s title hopes crushed in nightmare crash at Richmond
In stark contrast to Byron’s triumph, Chase Elliott faced a challenging and disappointing outing at Richmond Raceway.
Known for his remarkable consistency and calm under pressure, Elliott’s race strategy quickly unraveled due to a series of unfortunate circumstances.
Mechanical issues plagued his No. 9 Chevrolet leading to multiple unscheduled pit stops and significant loss of track position. This setback was compounded by an on-track incident mid-race, further damaging Elliott’s car and forcing additional repairs.
Consequently, Elliott finished well outside the top 20 – a result that significantly diminishes his playoff seeding and complicates his path towards defending his title.
“I have no idea what happened,” said Elliott. “I saw them crashing and were all stacking up, trying to get stopped.
“After the wreck was over, I thought we were done wrecking and I was just trying to squeak by. I guess somebody didn’t know I was down there. I guess Kyle didn’t know I was to the left.
“Whoever was next to me [Zane Smith] and myself were trying to get through the accident, and we were coming through there at a decent rate.
“Unfortunately, Kyle just didn’t know that we were on the bottom. Hate that. We had a good start to the night, and it slowly unraveled until it finally fell apart. Hopefully, I get on a better stretch, starting next week.”
