Newly crowned nine-time World Rally Champion Sebastien Ogier has confirmed he will participate in just 10 of the 14 rounds in the 2026 WRC season.
This decision, revealed fresh off the Frenchman’s dramatic championship-clinching podium at Rally Saudi Arabia, marks a strategic shift that balances his unparalleled racing prowess with family priorities.
Ogier’s journey to this point has been nothing short of legendary, evolving from a Junior World Rally Championship winner in 2008 to a force who has matched Sebastien Loeb‘s record of nine drivers’ crowns.
His 2025 campaign exemplified this mastery: entering 11 events, he secured six victories and podium finishes in 10, amassing enough points to edge out Toyota teammate Elfyn Evans by a mere four in the final tally.
This part-time formula proved revolutionary as Ogier became the first driver since Loeb’s injury-affected 2006 season to claim a World Rally Championship title without a full calendar commitment, proving that precision and consistency can trump sheer volume in the unpredictable arena of WRC.
The catalyst for Ogier’s 2026 WRC 10 rounds plan stems from a deeply personal revelation during Rally Japan, where he sacrificed a rare family holiday week to chase crucial championship points.
“One thing is for sure: I don’t have the motivation anymore to go a full year,” Ogier said. “It makes such a difference when you have this couple of weeks more at home and also especially this year I had to miss, for the first time, one holiday week of my son and it was during Rally Japan.
“So it was worth the trip, I needed those points, but yeah it didn’t feel so great and I want to avoid that as much as I can. That’s why I announced next year I won’t be competing when he has holiday.
“I just found a great balance like this so next year, I will announce it now because I just wanted to stop the speculation of when is he coming or not and sometimes I feel exhausted with that.
“And I want also to close the mouth of the people who just say ‘oh he just comes when he feels it’s easier or whatever’ so just simple: you look the calendar, when it’s a German school holiday I won’t be there and otherwise I will make 10 rallies.”

The 41-year old will remain as one of the 2026 Toyota WRC drivers but the team is yet to to confirm the races he will participate.
From a championship vantage, Ogier’s path to become 2026 WRC season champion remains viable, though he admits replicating 2025’s “stars aligned” magic would be “far from easy.”
“The reality is this season, it’s been an amazing run – 11 rallies, 10 times on the podium, six wins,” he added. “It’s been, I don’t know the average point, but it’s incredible and these kind of things, you know, in motorsport, there’s so many parameters you don’t control.
“On weekends like this [Saudi Arabia], for example, that was the extreme case, but it’s happened often, you know. I try, I have many elements in my control, but so many things can happen.
“I’m human, you know, everybody does mistakes. And this year, it’s probably one of my best seasons ever in terms of performance and in terms of consistency.
“So it worked all together, the stars got aligned, and now I have the chance to get these nine titles. But yeah, to press repeat in a season like this would be far from easy.”
Sebastien Ogier will team up with full-time 2026 Toyota WRC drivers including; Elfyn Evans, Takamoto Katsuta, Sami Pajari and Oliver Solberg, who steps up to replace the circuit-bound Kalle Rovanperä.
