Alex Palou topped the timesheets in Monday’s Indy 500 Practice Day 7 as Christian Rasmussen endured yet another setback following a crash at Turn 2.
The two-hour session at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway unfolded with heightened anticipation and intensity as all 33 entries seized their final on-track opportunity before the pivotal Carb Day.
From the outset, the atmosphere in Gasoline Alley was electric. IndyCar teams and drivers were acutely aware that this was their last chance to gather valuable data and dial in their cars under race-like conditions before the traditional Carb Day warmup.
Indy 500 Practice Day 7 was marked by a blend of aggressive drafting runs, long stints and simulated race traffic all designed to prepare for the unique demands of the 500-mile classic.
Alex Palou, piloting the No. 10 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, emerged as the pacesetter of the day. The reigning series champion demonstrated his characteristic composure and technical prowess, clocking a best lap of 226.765 mph.
Palou’s performance was a testament to both his skill and the meticulous preparation of the Ganassi team which has consistently been among the frontrunners throughout the month of May. His ability to navigate traffic efficiently and extract maximum speed from the car in drafting conditions set him apart, reinforcing his status as a pre-race favorite.
Hot on Palou’s heels was the experienced Helio Castroneves in the No. 06 Meyer Shank Racing Honda. The four-time Indianapolis 500 winner posted a lap at 226.441 mph, signaling that his quest for a record-breaking fifth victory remains very much alive.
Takuma Sato driving the No. 75 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda was another veteran who impressed, clocking 226.087 mph to secure third on the day. His aggressive approach in traffic and ability to find clean air in the pack highlighted his intent to contend for a third Indy 500 crown.
Chevrolet’s top representative was Jack Harvey who slotted into fourth place ahead of his Dreyer & Reinbold Racing teammate Ryan Hunter-Reay who rounded out the top five.
Dreyer & Reinbold Racing’s performance was particularly noteworthy given the team’s limited resources compared to the powerhouse outfits, underscoring his adaptability and the team’s knack for maximizing their package at Indianapolis.
The remainder of the top ten featured a mix of established stars and emerging talents. Nolan Siegel continued his impressive rookie campaign by finishing sixth, while Team Penske’s Will Power and Josef Newgarden occupied seventh and eighth, respectively.
Power was especially active during Indy 500 Practice Day 7, logging a session-high 88 laps alongside Callum Ilott. This high mileage reflected a deliberate effort by Penske to simulate various race scenarios and ensure their cars are robust over long stints.
Christian Rasmussen crashes
Christian Rasmussen representing Ed Carpenter Racing posted the ninth-fastest time but saw his session end prematurely after a crash at the exit of Turn 2.
The incident unfolded as Rasmussen lost the rear of his car, making contact with the outside wall and subsequently spinning into the infield grass before striking the inner wall.
Although the impact was not severe and Rasmussen emerged unscathed, the crash marked his second brush with trouble at Turn 2 this month, raising concerns about the car’s handling in that section of the track.
The Ed Carpenter Racing crew immediately set about repairs, determined to have the car ready for the next session.

Meanwhile, Conor Daly completed the top ten. Arrow McLaren while not topping the charts on this particular day remained a formidable presence with Kyle Larson taking 11th ahead of Pato O’Ward while Alexander Rossi finished 17th fastest.
Andretti Global, another powerhouse outfit, saw strong performances from Kyle Kirkwood and Colton Herta, both of whom consistently ran near the front during practice.
Kirkwood and Herta focused on race simulations, working with their engineers to ensure their Hondas were balanced and predictable over long runs. Marcus Ericsson also put in solid laps, highlighting the team’s all-around strength.
