Marc Marquez overpowered Ducati stablemate Fabio Di Giannantonio at the delayed Brazilian MotoGP Sprint to snatch his first victory of the 2026 season by 0.213 seconds.
The 15‑lap encounter was postponed by around 80 minutes due to a sinkhole on the main straight caused by a burst drainage pipe, prompting frantic repairs.
When the lights finally went out, Di Giannantonio unleashed a flawless holeshot from pole, his VR46 Ducati catapaulting into the lead as the pack surged down Goiania’s long main straight, tires screeching for grip on the hastily patched surface.
Marquez, aboard his factory Ducati GP26, slotted into second initially after a solid start from P3, before the opportunistic Fabio Quartararo on the Yamaha sliced through before the end of lap one, demoting the champion to third.
Di Giannantonio wasted no time building a buffer, his smooth lines through the high-speed Turn 10-11 complex and precise braking into the chicanes allowing him to stretch his lead to 0.7s by the close of the opening lap.
Marquez, meanwhile, was tasked with carving through Quartararo’s determined defense but the Frenchman dug deep with brutal yet clean defense against the faster Ducati, holding Marquez at bay for several laps as Aprilia trio of Marco Bezzecchi, Ai Ogura and Jorge Martin lurked menacingly in the mix.
By lap three, Marquez had summoned his trademark precision, feinting left at Turn 6 before diving under Quartararo on the exit, reclaiming second and immediately setting his sights on the leader, whose gap had ballooned to 1.2s.
Di Giannantonio appeared untouchable in the middle stint, managing his soft rear tire impeccably while Marquez reeled him in lap by lap, the gap tumbling as the Spaniard’s pace in sector three faltered.
Bezzecchi held third initially, but Martin’s relentless pressure paid off when the Italian went deep through Turns 10 and 11, allowing the 2024 world champion to pounce into what became a podium-contending position.
Quartararo dropped behind the factory Aprilias as he the show in his scrap with Ogura, holding fifth with sheer willpower, fending off the Japanese rider’s advances through the technical sector two.
As the Sprint hurtled toward its climax with five laps remaining, Marquez latched onto Di Giannantonio’s gearbox, the duo now inseparable in a cat-and-mouse duel that had the Goiania grandstands roaring.
The VR46 Ducati rider defended masterfully, blocking the inside line at Turn 1 as he mirrored Marquez’s every move, but the pressure told with three laps to go when he ran slightly wide at Turn 12—a momentary lapse in the third sector’s demanding rhythm.
Marquez pounced like a predator, threading his Ducati through into Turn 13 with surgical accuracy to emerge as the race leader, while Di Giannantonio slotted back into pursuit.
The final two laps became a heart-pounding affair, Di Giannantonio launching desperate counters at Turn 6 and the chicane but Marquez remained pitch-perfect, defending without error even as a twitch in the final corner tested his resolve.
The pair crossed the line split by two-tenths, Marc Marquez claiming his first Sprint victory of the 2026 season as Fabio Di Giannantonio settled for a hard-fought second, his pace confirming his status as Marquez’s most credible rival in the Ducati stable.
Behind the two, the battle for the final podium spot had its own drama, with Martin pulling clear of Bezzecchi after capitalizing on the Italian’s Turn 9 mistake, securing third in an emotional return to form—his first podium since 2024.
Ai Ogura rounded out the top five for Trackhouse Aprilia, while Quartararo claimed P6, holding off a charging Alex Marquez in seventh.
