Inter Europol Competition claimed LMP2 victory in caution-filled 2026 IMSA Motul SportsCar Endurance Grand Prix at Road America after late penalty for Tower Motorsports.
The No. 43 Oreca 07 Gibson of Jeremy Clarke, Bijoy Garg and Tom Dillmann did not simply cruise to the flag; the trio rebuilt their race after falling a lap down and then used the late-race caution sequence to turn a rough afternoon into a second straight triumph.
Daniel Goldburg led the field from green in the No. 22 United Autosports Oreca, but spun on the restart following the first full caution, vaulting the No. 52 PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports entry of Misha Goikhberg to the top spot.
Misha, however, was hit with a drive-through penalty for an unsafe re-entry effectively relinquishing the lead to Jeremy Clarke in the No. 43 Inter Europol Oreca.
Shortly thereafter, Jon Field’s No. 37 Intersport Racing Oreca crashed at the Carousel, bringing out the second the second full-course caution which would ultimately culminate into a five-car incident on the restart.
The No. 2 United Autosports of Phil Fayer spun at the exit of Turn 14 and collided with the No. 18 Era Motorsport of Naveen Rao, collecting Goldburg’s No. 22, John Farano’s No. 8 Tower Motorsports Oreca and Gerry Kraut’s JDC Miller entry.
Remarkably, every car was able to resume without a caution being required, but the incident reshuffled the LMP2 order in significant fashion and opened the door for Inter Europol’s Jeremy Clarke to extend his lead.
At one point the No. 43 had built a commanding lead of twenty seconds over the field, only for the fourth full-course yellow to compress the field as Tower Motorsports’ Tristan Vautier assumed the class lead.
However, the No. 8 Tower Motorsports Oreca was slapped with a drive through penalty in the closing hour for leaving a tyre unattended on pit road, setting the stage for a defining late restart.
The No. 43 inherited the lead with Frenchman Tom Dillmann at the wheel, and locked in a three-wide battle against the No. 2 United Autosports car of Mikkel Jensen and the sister No. 22 of Paul di Resta with less than thirty minutes remaining.
However, Jensen crashed into di Resta at Turn 14 costing both United Autosports entries any hope of a Road America LMP2 win or podium finish.
Jensen was handed a 44-second drive-through penalty for his role in the contact with his own teammate, while the No. 43 Inter Europol Oreca took the chequered flag first as the race concluded under yellow.
The No. 04 CrowdStrike Racing by APR ORECA of George Kurtz, Toby Sowery and Alex Quinn finished second to preserve their championship lead, with the No. 11 TDS Racing ORECA of Tobi Lutke, David Heinemeier Hansson and Mathias Beche claiming the last step of the podium.
Behind TDS, the No. 99 AO Racing entry of PJ Hyett, Dane Cameron and Jonny Edgar was classified fourth after surviving damage which initially put the “Spike the Dragon” car a lap down.
